Announcement of the Universi- ty's plans for a multi-million dol- lar campus beyond the Huron Riv- er last January ranked as the top campus news story of the year. A poll of Daily editors naming the 10 biggest stories of 1952 gave the projected Huron development first place. * * * THE celebrated "spring mad- ness" riot last March, which fired similar disturbances all over the country, received the allocade as number two story. Starting early one warm, spring evening and lasting well into the next morning, the "pantie raid" brought out 2,000 students who romped around cam- pus and the dorms stealing linge- rie as a souvenir of the madcap evening. Ranked in third place was President Harlan H. Hatcher's veto of the Student Legislature sponsored anti-bias bill which virtually ended SL's long at- tempt to bring an end to dis- criminatory practices in campus fraternities through legislation. The long struggle over Univer- sity policies on outside speakers which was climaxed last year by four permanent or temporary ban- nings, the McPhaul dinner and by Lecture Committee rejection of the SL speakers plan was rated in fourth place. Dramatic, violent prison riots at Southern Michigan Prison last April emerged as the fifth rank- ing story of the year. Causing more than two million dollars in damage the rioters held out for several tense days before being quelled. * * * THE LONG seres of candidates and politicians who passed through Ann Arbor and nearby cities cap- tured sixth place in the poll. Victorious GOP vice-presiden- tial candidate Richard Nixon made a whistle stop tour through Ann Arbor and General Eisenhower came to nearby Jackson during the campaign. Defeated candidate Adlai Ste- venson spoke at Ypsilanti. Seventh place story was the vis- it of unsuccessful GOP presiden- tial aspirant Sen. Robert A. Taft who blasted a governmental "trend toward socialism"~ in a ill Auditorium speech last April. Controversial investigations of Communist Party activities in Michigan by the House Un- American Activities Committee in which three Ann Arbor Com- munist cells were named and several University graduates cit- ed was selected as eighth place story. Michigan's second straight NCAA hockey championship and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands' visit to campus were cited as the ninth and tenth place events, re- spectively. A poll o.f Associated Press edi- tors throughout the state ranked the Jackson riots as top state story for the year. The Huron develop- ment tied for eighteenth place in the survey and the "pantie raid" was mentioned after the biggest 20 yarns.
