NWEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1952 PAGE FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY Christmas Shopping Made Easier by Wide Assortment of Gifts in Stores <> Accessories Please Coeds Suggestions Include Gloves, Scarfs, Purses By SHIRLEY BLOOM From tip to toe the college coed hopes to come back to school dressed in her new Christmas ac- cessories. She might have a trio of hand- sewn cotton gloves in black, white and eggshell on hand for all out- fits, colors and classes. NO COED will make a fuss about receiving a pair of embroidered angora mittens with pin wheels of mock pearls or a pair of white lace gloves with pearled cuffs for evening wear. These gloves will have in hand clutch purses of calf, leather or velvet, or they might be hidden under a white squirrel muff that represents ermine. The gloves may open to reveal a shocking pink silk satin purse covered with a tapestry of jewels with a compact and lipstick of the same material. FOR CAMPUS wear the white wool blanket mittens have a tight grasp on the new plaid carryall pouch bag. For her waist our Christmas coed will ask Santa for a variety of belts. Her dark clothes would be brightened by a golden-tone coin elasticized belt. However, judging from the stock carried in Ann Arbor stores, one may even buy novel but useful gifts for $1.00 or less. High on the list of these items is a purse ash tray that contains a cigarette rest on the inside. On its cover, one sees a cigarette cen- tered on a gold background. One of the newest items is a little stamp box complete with an attractive cover. Another product called a key- keeper, fastens inside a woman's handbag and makes it impossible for her to lose those elastic keys. Even gloves now remain intact when they are fastened with glove clips to the purse. Going even one step farther, producers have placed on the mar- ket two articles that will make the purse losers happy. One of these is a purse hangar- ashtray. The ashtray part of this gadget fits on a table edge while the hangar extends below the table holding the purse. Traveling shoe bags and plastic cosmetic cases containing un- breakable plastic bottles of assort- ed sizes promise to iron out many packing problems. Whether for dorm or travel use, sewing kits with red leatherette cases make practical gifts. In the perfume line many stores are selling applicators that sell for around 75 cents. New Shirt Look * * * Shirts Found To Be Useful Men'sGifts By ROZ SHLIMOVITZ With shirts being the new word in men's fashions, the Michigan man will find a variety of styles that could fit into his college ward- robe. The biggest change takes place in the collar as more and more fellows are seen sporting the but- ton collar and round collar styles for date and classroom wear. * * * WHILE THE button collar shirt has the reputation of being a prac- tical school or business shirt, one Ann Arbor store reports that they even have it in formal wear. This dress shirt for tuxedos is made out of silk and will be noticed at many dorm and fra- ternity Christmas formals. Becoming "the thing" on cam- pus is the Eastern style round col- lar shirt worn with the Repp striped tie and the tab clip. * * * A FAVORITE with men who like the classic English look to their dress, the shirt is made from Oxford cloth or white pique with regular or French cuffs. Eastern stores this year are pushing nylon shirts which wash easily, dry quickly and need no ironing, features which make them handy for traveling purposes. However, one Ann Arbor sales- man reported that the college stu- dents here don't like the nylon shirt classifying it as "an expen- sive but not a quality shirt." One new fabric that the stu- dents do "go for,, however, is brush cotton. A material that has a tighter weave than regular cot- ton-producing a softer finish. Electric Gifts Aid Students Selection Of 'Right'_Present Electricity has come of age and this year especially in the form of useful Christmas presents to fit the needs of everyone on a stu- dent's shopping list. For someone special, an electric razor is a good gift. Thisyear small electric razors in pastel shades are being shown especially for the women. Electrical appliances are always accepted as welcome gifts. They mak take the form of an electric clock, an automatic toaster or an electric mixer. An electric blanket for a cold winter night may be beyond the student's budget but could be put on a list of ideas for future refer- ence. A French fryer is a handy ap- pliance for a family to own also. Completing the list of electrical gifts might be a steam iron, a portable electric broiler or a small roaster. Many magazines have published good ideas and a browse through the stores will serve to stimulate planning. By RUTH TORRANT Selecting gifts ror the home' and family can be a pleasurable experience if the harried student can sit down for a few minutes and reconsider his family's likes and needs. These few ideas may be of help in choosing accessories for the home and the first suggestions given are all under $8. If you have the kind of family which is constantly on the go a small notebook may be just the thing to jot messages in. One such notebook comes in simulated leather of a vivid red or forest green. This has the added aid of a magnetized gold-finished pencil that clings to the rings inside the cover. Prints and reproductions of paintings make nice gifts from you to your family. Ann Arbor is a good shopping center for these. Perhaps TV has completely taken over as the source of enter- tainment for your family. If not, a fresh new deck of cards might be a good gift. The washable type can be found for around $2.50. Gift booklets of coupons that buy anything at RKO theatres, from tickets to candy can be pur- chased for $1, or $5. This might be one way to get Mother -or Dad to take an evening off. Books are always appropriate gifts and make nice additions to the home. Families who enjoy good food would probably appreciate a bas- ket of plum pudding, stuffed figs or fruit cake. Such things are specialties in many stores during the holiday season. Cheese Chests containing a va- riety of spreads are a nice change from the candy so often given al- though candy is always an appro- priate gift. Keep food hot throughout a meal with a wrought-iron trivet that has a separate sterno holder. Pretzels and popcorn can be easily served in a wicker spoon basket with an extra long handle which makes a nice gift. A new barbeque, that works in- side and out all year 'round is priced under $6.00. This is copper and nickel plated steel. Steak sets could be given to go along with the barbeque if you and a brother or sister wanted to give related presents. Butterspreaders make nice gifts also and canape used as cheese or relish spreaders. Six of these can be purchased together or they can be bought separately. Continuing in the same line we find Swedish, satin-finish, stain- less-steel flatware in a 6 piece place setting for $8. Another ver- sion of stainless steel dinnerware is that with bamboo handles. An entertaining accessory for a fireplace is a box of extra long taper matches. A brass holder to accompany this gift would also be an idea. Another cheerful gift might be a door knocker. They come in many materials and usually have a place to engrave or paint a name. A brightly painted Iranian goat bell was seen which served as a door knocker. >' 1 For luxurious gifts .. .
