SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1952 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE PW U now Lounge To Offer Spot For Students, Faculty Union To Hold Annual Christmas Formal; Clare Shepard To Present Holiday Music Students and faculty members will be provided with a place where they can meet informally over a cup of coffee when the Student- Faculty Lounge opens at 8 a.m.. tomorrow in the Ann Arbor Room in the second floor of the League. The lounge is being started for the purpose of offering a place for informal discussions, small review sessions and conferences. IT WILL BE available for any- one who wants to spend some time relaxing in an informal atmos- phere of comfortable lounge chairs between the hours of 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hosts and.hostesses will be on hand every day during these hours to serve coffee to visitors.. At this time the club 'Ensian picture will be taken, and members have been asked to bring a wood and to wear sweaters and skirts. * * * RIDING CLUB-Mary Malcolm, Riding Club manager, has announ- ced that all meetings of the club have suspended for the winter months. A reorganizational meet- ing will be held in the spring. Various campus groups will be scheduled to take over manag- ing the room each day. Coffee to be served at the new lounge will be made available by a League fund and a kitty, to which visitors may contribute. * * * THE student-faculty lounge will provide a place to drop in during the day, but it will also be available for groups to use for discussions. To schedule a group of ap- proximately five or more stu- dents and professors, reserva- tions may be made by calling Miss Vyn at 2-3251. While the room is reserved it will still remain open to other visitors. * * * , AFTER THE lounge has been in use for several weeks, activities will be scheduled for certain hours. Panel discussions, Faculty- Wives night, bi-weekly student- faculty coffee hours, movies and seasonal parties are some of the things the louge will be used for later in the semester. Students interested in working as hosts and hostesses may sign up in the League Undergraduate Office where a list will be posted. This week men's and women's honoraries are scheduled to serve coffee. These groups include Scroll, Senior Society, Mortarboard, and Alpha Lambda Delta.° The men's honoraries that will be tending the lounge this week are Druids, Vulcans, Sphinx and Phi Eta Sigma. Cook To Sponsor MessiahSupper The annual Messiah Supper sponsored by Martha Cook dormi- tory, will be held at 5 p.m. today. The list of guests who will be honored include Dean and Mrs. Odegaard, the Messiah soloists, Deans of the University schools and their wives, President and Mrs. Harlan Hatcher, the Board of Re- gents and the Cook board of di- rectors. After dinner coffee and dessert will be served in the Blue Room, where a special holiday program will be presented. The Cook and Law Grad choirs will combine their talents and sing a number of traditional Christmas hymns under the direction of Sue Shaffer. More modern Christmas songs will be sung by the 'Serfs,' a group of lawyers. A solo by Elizabeth Gjilsness and a Christmas reading by Jan Everett will conclude the entertainment. Marlene Fisher is the chairman of the Supper. Old St. Nick will reign at the Union's traditional Christmas for- mal "Santa's Fantasy," to be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday in the Union Ballroom. Clare Shepard and his band will render the holiday music for the evening. -A HUGH CHRISTMAS tree will add to the Yuletide spirit of the dance while recorded Christmas carols will carry the Christmas spirit to the door to greet couples as they arrive. "Santa's Fantasy" will be this Senior Petitions Due Tomorrow In LeagueOffice Petitions for Senior Night are due at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the Un- dergraduate Office of the League. Coeds may sign up for inter- views when they hand in their peti- tions. Members of the interviewing and nominating committee will meet for interviews Tuesday through Thursday. There are six positions open on the central committee of Senior Night. These include general chair- man, assistant chairman, patrons, tickets and publicity, decorations and programs, and entertainment. The purpose of Senior Night is to unite graduating senior women for their last main activity on cam- pus. The evening consists of a tra- ditional march, a banquet in the League Ballroom, and attendance of the premier showing of Junior Girls Play. Entertainment at the banquet will be arranged by the entertain- ment chairman, and in past years has included excerpts of the grad- uating class' Frosh Weekend, Sophomore Cabaret and JGP. Coed Study Table The Union Student Offices will sponsor a Sunday night coed study table today in the Union. All students wanting a quiet place to study are invited to use the Union facilities. to use year's version of the annual Christmas formal sponsored by the Union Executive Council. It will be preceded by a banquet for the council members. Taking the spotlight at inter- mission time, the Novelaires will feature several popular songs. THE NOVELAIRES recently ap- peared on Varsity Night and won first place with their musical an- tics in last year's Gulantics con- test. Members of the Novelaires in- clude Bob McGrath, tenor; Dave Calahan, second tenor; Dick Frank, baritone and Ara Ber- gerian, bass. Although there are only 15 more shopping days till Christmas, Al Magnotta, chairman of the dance, reminds students that there are only six more days to purchase the limited number of tickets for the all-campus Union formal. * * * TICKETS for the dance are $1.50 a couple and may be pur- chased in advance at the main desk in the Union lobby. For some refreshments > throughout the dance, couples can sip egg nog in the Terrace Room which will be lighted by Twinkling Stars to give the il- lusion of an outdoor cafe. All-campus 1:30 permission has been granted for the dance. The first Union formal was pre- sented in 1935 at the beginning of the school year and traditionally opened the social calendar. It was the only all-campus affair of that time which could be attended re- gardless of class, school or affil- iation. In 1939 the Union Formal was presented in December as a Christ- mas formal and has become a University tradition ever since, highlighting the holiday season on campus. Hillel The Hillel Supper Club will not be held today as previously announced, according to Marc Jacobson, '55, chairman. The supper club will meet next Sunday. Junior Coeds To Try Out For Musical Tryouts for the annual produc- tion of the Junior Girls' Play will be held this week. Tryouts will be held at the fol- lowing times: 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 pm. Wednesday. Rooms will be posted in the League. After these preliminary tryouts, final tryouts will be held next week. All junior women who were not able to attend the mass meeting last Thursday are urged to sign up for the various JGP committees in the undergraduate office in the League. JGP is a musical comedy writ- ten, produced and directed by jun- ior women. All eligible junior coeds are invited to try out for the pro- duction.
