SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 195' PAGE FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY MORALE BOOSTER: Beauty Shop Serves Patients 4Q * . . s By JOYCE FICKIES The woman's traditional stand- by and morale booster, the beauty parlor, has been given a new twist at the University Hospital. Rather than making trips them- selves to have faces or hair beauti- fied, women confined to beds in the huge institution can have the shop come to them. * * * THE SHOP, which has been in the Hospital for three years, is op- erated by Hazel Plumpton. Locat- ed in a sunny fifth floor room, it is equipped for anything from hair- cuts and manicures to perma- nents and bleaches. By means of a portable unit the operator can travel around to patients unable to get out of bed. Biggest difference between Mrs. Plumpton's work and that of any gther beautician is that she has had to learn to work on patients lying flat instead of sitting in a chair. With her roving unit she serves patients in the Maternity Hospital, Simpson Memorial In- stitute and the Neuropsychiatric Institute, in addition to the hos- pital proper. She has a special unit in the tuberculosis section where she works in a mask and " gown. ,Mrs. Plumpton has sometimes worked on persons in coma or who must lie perfectly still because of the gravity of their illness. BESIDES improving' a patient's appearance, the work provides a "tremendous psychological lift," the beatician said.
