Janet Bradshaw, Mary Kathryn Caris, Dorothy Jean Clarkson, Choral Union Singers Form One of Oldest Music Groups - £Aokin9 at r;- C I, Over 350 singers under the di- rection of Prof. Lester McCoy, of the music school, ban together each year to form the University Choral Union, one of the largest and oldest choral groups in Am- erica. 1 Each year the group gives two major performances of Handel's Messiah at the opening of the Christmas Season. In the spring the chorus also participates in two of the May Festival concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra and distinguished soloists, under the direction of Thor Johnson, con- ductor of the Cincinnati Sym- phony Orchestra. * * * ORGANIZED; IN 1879 by the University Musical Society, the Choral Union began with 30 or 40 singers from several church choirs who joined together to sing chor- uses from the Messiah. By the following year most of the singers had left Ann Arbor so the group opened their ranks to all comers and prepared their second year of concerts. In this year the group elected their first president, Calvin Cady, who served for eight years. Albert Stanley took over the president's reins in 1888 and for 33 years directed the group to both artistic and financial success. Un- der Stanley distinguished artists and great orchestras were included on the concert series with the un- ion. * * * EARL MOORE in 1921, Thor Johnson in 1939 and now Prof. McCoy have followed in Stanley's footsteps as presidents of the group. During the years of its or- ganization the Boston Symphony forerunner of the Boston Festival Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony and now the Philadelphia Orches- tra have accompanied the group. Today there are 17,0010 alumni of the group in all parts of the world. Many members have gone on to make music their careers. In the years since its organiza- tion, the choral union has given nearly all great major works in public, some many times and some as premier performances. WELCOME COEDS!
