Although this week concludes all physical education classes for the year, the Women's Athletic Build- ing will be open throughout the exam period. To relieve the tension of last- minute cramming for exams, stu- dents may find relaxation by playing tennis matches or golf. Now students will have a chance to apply their skills outside of class and take advantage of the things they have learned in their physical education courses. The use of tennis courts is facil- itated for all women at the WAB by the barring of men unless they are playing with women. Women players have the choice of the courts over mixed players, while men can play only if there are unwanted courts. Students who would like to take advantage of the opportunities for some physical exercise in addition to their mental work, may obtain tennis racquets and golf clubs which are available for a small "SHIVERING SHANKS" WILKINS: Literary College Senior Class President Will Seek Position in Publications Field JOAN ST. DENIS NANCY LEWIS * * * * * * CLAIRE JACOBSEN HELENE VIEDRAH * * * * * * Parents, Announce Womens' Engagements By RITA GEDROVICS "My burning ambition in life is to be a good writer," is the goal expressed by the senior class presi- dent of the literary college. Upon graduation, Roger Wilkins, who is majoring in political science, plans to get an immediate job in the publications field but later wants to be a fiction writer. Wilkins became interested in writing by observing people in their everyday activities and their differing reactions to the same situation. He enjoys going to unfamiliar places, and talk- ing to odd personalities. "Since people will be in my writing, I want to assimilate different ideas" says Wilkins. During his University days, Wil- kins has engaged in various acti- vities. In his freshman year he ran on the track team and also served on the Strauss house coun- cil. As a sophomore, he was elected president of the National Associa- tion for the Advancement of Col- lege Degrees and ran for Student Legislature. In his third year Wilkins served as chairman of the Human Rela- tions committee of SL and in the spring acted as member at large of the SL cabinet. In addition, he was tapped for Sphinx. "Shivering Shanks" was the title Wilkins acquired when in- itiated into the Michigamua. He is also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi. Hailing from Grand Rapids, Wilkins is an ardent Democrat and great Stevenson supporter. He is also a fervent rooter for the New York Yankees. Wilkins most enjoys himself when his shoes are off and he gets a thrill from writing poetry, say- ing, "Perhaps I like to write be- cause I can always have my shoes off when I'm pounding on a type- writer." It is Wilkin's opinion that he is the most unmusical person living and he says "If you'd ask the girl I'm pinned to, she'd very readily tell you I can't dance either." Although at first Wilkins en- tered activities and approached life with a youthful, idealistic zeal, at the age of 21 he admits he has acquired a "somewhat cynical attitude." He wants to agree with Hobbs that "Life is nasty, cruel . .. make the most of it." Believing in individualistic val ues, Wilkins thinks that it is most important to be happy and secure himself. "If you are frustrated yourself, you can't go and advise others, you'll only make a mess of every- thing," he feels. Wilkins also spent one summer working on a mail route in his home town. "Delivering mail was- n't bad at all. If I fail as a writer, I'll be a mailman," stated Wilkins. SUCCESS to you al1!! It's been a pleasure to serve you.
