While the Wolverine hockey team annexed its second straight NCAA crown, and the Maize and Blue wrestlers won the Big Ten Championship, Michigan's once mighty football team was-defeated by Ohio State on the last weekend of the season, and was thus de- prived of the conference crown and a trip to the Rose Bowl. WOLVERINE puckmen defeated Boston University's hockey team, 14-3, in the semi-finals and then turned back the Gophers of Min- nesota in the show-down clash, 7-3, in the finals at Colorado Springs. Michigan wrestlers climaxed a succesful campaign in which they won the Big Ten champion- ship by placing two men in high positions in the NCAA tourna- ment. "Snip" Nalon won the national title in the 130-pound class while Dick O'Shaughnessy, captain-elect of next fall's football squad, reach- ed the semis of the 177-pound di- vision. The big disappointment for Mi- chigan fans was undoubtedly the letdown of the Maize and Blue gridders at Columbus, Ohio. After a shaky start in September, the Wolverine eleven gained momen- tum' and climaxed an uphill fight by defeating a highly rated Purdue squad, 21-10, to place the team at the doorstep of the Rose Bowl. HOWEVER THE Buckeye s promptly locked the door as they set back the Wolverine hopefuls, Michigan enthusiasts was thef failure of the basketball squad to improve its ninth place fin- ish of 1951-52. Bill Perigo, starting his first year as Wolverine basketball coach, introduced to Michigan fans a new fast-break style of cage play. The race-horse attack began in high gear as the Michigan hoopsters were victorious in their first two contests. However, the lack of experience soon showed itself and once again the Wolverine squad had to take a back seat to such Big Ten powers as Indiana, Illinois, and Minne- sota. Although the fast break style of play did not result in many first-year victories, the new type of Michigan basketball will pro- bably be developed into an at- tack that will return the Maize and Blue once again to a con- tending role among Big Ten cage powers. On the brighter side of the Mi- chigan sports scene was the show- ing of Matt Mann's swimmers. Finishing just behind Ohio State's powerful crew, the Wolverines notched a second place finish in the Big Ten meet at Iowa City. Led by Don Hill and Burwell "Bumpy" Jones, the Michigan na- tators went on to take third place Order Of TheCoif William Bain, '53L; William Beringer, '53L; Robert Blati, L; Alfred Blumrosen, '53L; Frank Bowen, L; George Burbach, '53L; James Callison, '53L; William Da- venport, '53L; Walter Flickinger, '53L; Carles Gibson, '53L. Mimes in the NCAA Championships, winding up behind the perennially strong Yale squad and the Buck- eyes again. IN TRACK, the Wolverines, though possesing one of the top three teams in the nation, rate only second best in the Big Ten. Don Canham's Maize and Blue tracksters would stand alone in the conference were it not for the powerful Illinois squad. The Wolverine cindermen, finished behind the Illini in the i n d o o r championships last March and are rated a slight un- derdog in the outdoor conference meet coming up next week-end. The prediction is based on the results of the Illinois-Michigan du- al meet held in Ann Arbor a couple of weeks ago when the Orange and Blue of Illinois out-performed Mi- chigan, the Penn Relays Champ- ion, by a 79%-52/3 score. With most of the spring sports winding up activity for the season this week, there is a definite pos- sibility that one or two more con- ference crowns will return to Ann Arbor. Michigan's golf squad, un- der Coach Bert Katzenmeyer, has dropped only one conference dual meet this season out of a dozen played. Michigan netters walked off the tennis courts with seven straight victories before being defeated for the first time by Michigan State. The Wolverines will have a chance to grab the conference titl(@ this weekend when they journey to Northwestern for the champion. ship tournament.
