,PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MAY 21, 1953 I I Druten Play To Start Run After nearly 200 performances on Broadway, John van Druten's comedy, "Old Acquaintance," will be presented on campus during the third week of the Drama Season. When the curtain goes up at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the audience in Lydia Mendelssohn Theater will see Ruth Chatterton in the lead- ing role. Playing Katherine Markham, an intelligent, fastidious but rather Bohemian lady novelist whose works are admired but not purchased, Miss Chatterson is supported by Lois Wilson and John Baragrey. Miss Wilson is cast as Mildred Watson Drake who is also a novel- ist but who writes stories with stereotyped plots that become best sellers. Baragrey will be seen as Rudd Kendell, Miss Markham's young lover whose involvements in the triangle become a quadrangle when Miss Drake's daughter, play- ed by Patricia Barry, arrives on the scene. 'Berlin U' Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting applications for the Student Legislature sponsored scholarship to the Free Univer- sity of Berlin. Applications may be obtained at the SL building. A know- ledge of the German language is required. Union Opera Petition Due Applications for the Union Op- era road show committee are due tomorrow, according to Mike Scherer, '54, general chairman of the Opera. All petitions for the Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Chicago, Toledo, Cleveland and Buffalo chairman- ships may be turned in at the Main desk of the Union. Any male student from one of these towns is eligible for the road show chair- manship of his city. Harold Johnson, '55SM, chair- man of the Opera's music com- mittee, said he is now accepting applications for the committee. All students interested in writing music for the Opera may call Johnson at 2-3297 before Friday. 'U' Scholars Will Publish New Lexicon Surrounded by books in three narrow rooms on the attic floor of Angell Hall, a small group of scholars are writing a dictionary, for a dead language. However, their work will produce the world's first complete Middle Englsh Dictionary, making the language of Chaucer and other writers from the years 1100 to 1500 a living one for students and teachers. BEGUN AT Cornell University, the project was transferred here in the early thirties for continued research with the -help of grants from the Rockefeller Foundation. The University now supports the project. More than twenty years of work were spent on research alone, and it will take at least ten years to publish all of the 8,000 page lexicon. The first vol- ume was publshed last year and sold very well with the Oxford University Press, according to Prof. Sherman Kuhn, associate editor of the dictionary. A third volume will be ready for publi- cation soon. Many difficulties hinder pro- gress on the dictionary, Prof. Kuhn said. Sometmes dates on manuscripts which the department has already incorporated into vol- umes are proven wrong and manu- scripts themselves are difficult to obtain. Announcements Seniors may pick up their com-' mencement announcements from 1 to 5 p.m. tomorrow and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wed- nesday at the Administration Bldg.
