NL1 FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1953 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE TIR - - i U I PRIZE-WINNING GROUP: Radio Guild Offers* Expert Training By FREDDI LOEWENBERG "Be natural." "You don't have to play Shake- speare. Play what you are suited for, but play it well." This is the advice that Frank Bouwsma, Grad., gives to neophyte members of the WUOM Radio Guild. The Guild offers instruction to its members in broadcasting techniques and radio acting, with the more advanced members form- ing a reserve of talent for WUOM programs. * * * INITIATED two years ago as the result of an idea of WUOM staff member Shirley Shepard, the Guild has advanced from a small group into a major activi- ty which has won two prizes for its excellence and has served as the model for many similar groups. It has become so popular that au- ditions are now necessary to keep its membership small. Headed by Bouwsma and Jim Bob Stephenson, Grad., the Guild is.divided into beginning and advanced groups, each meet- ing one afternoon a week. The only qualification for member- ship is a willingness to learn. Each Guild member undergoes a rigid training in the fundamentals of radio acting for one semester. As soon as he becomes proficient, he is used in regular WUOM pro- grams. THE GUILD, Bouwsma empha- sized, is not run as a class, but is done on a workshop basis. Sec- tions are limited to around 50, so that every person can get indi- vidual attention. " Members are there for training, he pointed out, as well as for fun. Giving scripts and assigned parts at each meeting, the mem- bers rehearse and work togeth- er in small groups, -presenting the finished product to the whole group for criticism. The more advanced students act as direc- tors, and members also work the Michigan Dancers To Give Concert Plying the distinguished trade of Pavlova, Nijinsky and Isadora Duncan, Michigan dancers will present their annual spring Dance Concert at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Pattengill Auditorium in the Ann Arbor High School. The Choreographers' Workshop and the ballet and modern dance clubs, together with Orchesis, the Michigan State dance group, will present seventeen original dance compositions. SL Scholarships Students interested in apply- ing for a Student Legislature scholarship to study at the Free University of Berlin during'the coming year may now pick up application blanks at the SL 'Building. The 1200 seat flashcard section presently being organized by the Wolverine Club for the coming football season will not be com- prised of former senior seats, Don Weir, of the athletic department said yesterday. According to Stan Bohrer,. '55, of the Wolverine Club, the "Block M" section, located between the 20 and 35 yard lines, will in no way deprive next year's seniors of choice seats. Movies of last year's flashcard display will be shown in conjunc- tion with Cinema Guild at the Architecture Auditorium from 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow, and at 8 p.m. Sunday, the club spokes- man said. Due to a lack of financial sup- port, Bohrer explained that the club has found it necessary to charge next year's participants a 25 cent membership fee. The club has scheduled registra- tion for next 'fall's card section from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Bar- bour Gymnasium. 'Block M' Flashcard Section Will Not Affect Senior Seating Friendly and Courteous Service at the DINNER B ELL I Due to the help shortage we are closed on Sundays from 4A.M. to 4P.M. Experience gained in the Guild has enabled its members to get top roles in speech department ra- dio shows, and in various student theater productions. Learning to act, Bouwsma explained, helps a person to learn to stand, on his own two feet. S* * * Although the Guild has not done any regular radio broadcasts this year, a series of 30 minute labora- tory productions were taped ex- perimentally in the Fall.
