MAYNARD KLEIN CONDUCTS CONCERT:
Women's Glee Club To Sing Tomorrow
n s w w

.I

By MARTHA PAPO
Even though he directs every-
thing from large orchestral and
vocal productions to the small
specialized Tudor Choir, Prof.
Maynard C. Klein of the music
school finds time for the Women's
Glee Club, which will hold its
spring concert at 8:30 p.m. tomor-
row at Hill Auditorium.
Prof. Klein's biggest production
was Berloiz's "Requiem" perform-
ed at Interlochen National Music
Camp. The program included 600
voices, a 200 piece orchestra, four
brass bands and 16 timpani.
Dubbed Uncle Maynard by his
students, the friendly director
earned his nickname while at In-
terlochen where he has been di-
rector for 11 years.
PROF. KLEIN has directed the
Women's Glee Club for the past
year in addition to organizing the
Michigan singers, Tudor Singers,
Bach Choir and the Women's
Choir,
Tomorrow, under his direc-
tion, the 120 voice Women's
Glee Club will present a varied
musical program. The Women's
Choir, Arts Chorale and the
Bach Choir will also perform.
Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus,"

Polio Effects
Cut in Tests
Paralysis resulting from polio-
myelitis has been effectively re-
duced in experimental monkeys,
Dr. Jonas E. Salk, professor of ex-
perimental bacteriology at the Uni-
versity of Pittsburgh said at the
fourth annual D. W. Gudakunst
public health lecture yesterday.
Dr. Salk explained that experi-
ments on the monkeys have shown
injections of the polio-causing vir-
us given in the antigen form leave
the monkeys with no postadisease
paralysis. The injections are simi-
lar to the vaccinations commonly
given against small-pox or yellow
fever.
The question now facing medi-
cal researchers is no longer how
to accomplish effective immuniza-
tion, Dr. Salk stressed, but how
to make the process practical while
avoiding ill effects. With advanced
knowledge the answer should be
forthcoming."
