THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1953 ___________________________________________________________________________ I U WOMM" 'THINKING' PLAYER: Pavichevich's Smart Play Team Asset Gavilan Smashes Davey With TKO, Keeps Title Hardworking, unassuming Ray Pavichevigh is not the most con- spicuous Michigan player on the basketball court. * * * At 5-11 he can easily be lost among the "big boys" but Pavich- evich is the stable, smart type of ball player that can hold a team together. * * . * THIS BEING his second year or varsityf-competition he tossed in 73 points in Big Ten games last season on 25 field goals and 23 free shots. Pavichevich seldom goes on scoring sprees but is a steady contributor in the points col- umn. He has an excellent assort- ment of shots including good hooks with both hands which net him a high percentage on shots. A fine faker, he is hard to stop when driving in for layup shots. One of those persons who fall under the classification of "thinking ball players," his mind is always one step ahead of his hands, which are usually one step ahead of his competition. An -East Chicago, Indiana pro- duct Pavichevich played his high school basketball in an area where many of the country's best men are produced. He faced ,competitors such as Don Schlundt and Bob Leonard. * * * PAVICHEVICH was on the Michigan baseball team last spring and saw some action on this front. During the summer he follows this interest up by playing in an in- dustrial league in and around his home town. A physical education major he plans to return to Indiana after graduating and find a coaching job somewhere around the state. CHICAGO - (RP) - Cuban Kid Gavilan, a rugged champion from the school of hard knocks, floored college-bred Chuck Davey four times Wednesday night with his explosive punching to hold his world welterweight title on a 10- round technical knockout. The previously unbeaten Davey was unable to answer the bell for the 10th after absorbing a bloody beating in the savage ninth. * * * SWITCHING southpaw at times against his left-handed foe, Gavi- lan flunked the Michigan State grad in the finals of his graduate course in pugilism. After the bout was stopped, the Kid gaily danced a few rhumba steps in his corner while waving to the roaring crowd of Davey partisans at Chicago Stadium. It was no contest, although the game Davey kept flicking his impotent punches in annoy- ing fashion against the 27-year- old champ from Camaquey, Cuba. Downed for a nine-count in the third by a furious fusillade of right-hand punches, Davey survived until the sleek xkeed turned on the heat in the ninth. Gavilan amused himself by switch- ing southpaw in the, fifth and sixth. HAIRSTYLING TO PLEASE 0 8 Tonsorial Artists * Collegiate Cuts a Specialty Try Our Personnel!
