'LA ZAPATERA PRODIGIOSA':
Sociedad Hispanica To Present Play

Life is a round of trouble for a
middle-aged Spanish shoemaker
with a flirtatious wife in "La
Zapatera Prodigiosa," to be pre-
sented by members of La Sociedad
Hisanica at 8 p.m. today, and 3:15
and 8 p.m. tomorrow at Lydia Men-
delssohn Theater.
Gossiping neighbors and a tale-
bearing young boy add to the shoe-
maker's problems, which he final-
ly solves by deserting his wife
and returning three months later
in disguise, with a plan to test
her affection.
A COLORFUL, poetic atmos-
phere has been designed by the
author, Federico Garcia Lorca, to
bring out the customs of small
town Spanish folk-life. The neigh-
bors in the play are nameless,
known only by the colors of the
clothes they wear.
The part of the shoemaker.ill
be played by Angelo Cantera,
'53, Tuesday and by Karl Ben-
son, Grad., Wednesday. Jose-
phine Gomez, '53, and Carolee
Dickey, '55, will take the part of
the young wife on the different
days.
Admission is 65 cents and tickets
are available at Lydia Mendel-
ssohn box office.
The play is part of .the third
annual Spanish fiesta sponsored
by the Department of Romance
Languages. About 300 students of
Spanish from state high schools
and junior colleges are expected
to be present today for the first
day- of the program. The program
will be repeated tomorrow for an
equal number of students.
Dexter To Analyze
Beethoven Sonata
Prof. Benning Dexter of the
music school will analyze and play
Beethoven's "Sonata, Op. 109," at
4:15 p.m. today in Auditorium A,
Angell Hall.
Today's performance will be the
eighth in a series of lecture-re-
citals sponsored by the School of
Music.

Black Gives
etaphysics
Talk Here
The way to read the total pub-
lished works-90 pages-of Ludwig
Wittgenstein is by treating them
as "metaphysics in the grand
style," Prof. Max Black of Cornell
University said yesterday at a lec-
ture sponsored by the philosophy
department.
Wittgenstein's writings often
strike the reader as being dog-
matic because he expected it to
ge understood only by those hav-
ing similar thoughts, Black added.
MOST PHILOSOPHERS agree
that there are two categories-
things and fact, making up the
universe, the professor observed.
Wittgenstein based his conception
of the universe on fact alone, he
added.
"A fact, if a fact, is a fact."
In explaining the contemporary
metaphisicist's idea of logical
space, Black said that even science
ar fiction writers can't imagine space
or time not within the realm of
human thought.
