For the Masters.. . ... at Moderate Price By ALICE BOGDONOFF In a clipped English accent, Wadia Khouri Makdissi, Leban- ese suffragette, yesterday describ- ed the highlights of her "cosmo- politan, democratic" country. Mrs. Makdissi, who was one of the women leaders in the recent fight for women's rights in Leb- anon, termed the new women's franchise law, "a natural step in the emancipation of women in the Middle East." * * * HOWEVER, the English edu- cated visitor said the women are still "up in arms" because while illiterate men are allowed to vote, women must prove that they are literate. She pointed out that while a large percentage of Lebanese women are literate, higher edu- cation for women is compara- tively new. Mrs. Makdissi went on to ex- plain the westernized, democratic social structure of Lebanon re- sulting from constant contact with the West. "Westernization has touched even the villages," she said, "since so many young people go abroad to study and then re- turn to improve their homes." Describing Lebanon as "not typical of the Middle East," Mrs. Makdissi said the social system there was "composed of one large middle class with no real aris- tocracy or primitive peasantry." She later labeled the Lebanese feeling toward Israel one of anti- Zionism, not one of anti-semitism. Mrs. Makdissi, who is making a tour of eighteen states under the sponsorship of the American friends of the Middle East, will speak today to the Ann Arbor Women's City Club.
