SUNDAY, MAY 11, 1952 TIt MICHIGAN DAILY Purdue, Bucks Upset 'M' Golfers Boilermakers Slaughter Ohio State; OSU Shades Wolverines, 19%-161/ Illinois Downs Michigan In Track Duel74' 2-57 Champaign Squad's Balance Decides Tilt; McEwen, Ross Break Meet Record in Mile By DICK LEWIS A string of golf successes ended at five yesterday when Purdue and Ohio State scored stunning upsets over the Michigan links squad in a quadrangular meet on the Uni- versity course. Coach' Sam Voinoff's fired-up Boilermaker six-some easily set back the Wolverines by a 25-11 count, while the Buckeyes came from behind to eke out a 191/2-162 verdict over the Maize and Blue on the last nine holes of the 36- hole grind. * * * MICHIGAN'S only win in the overcast, wind-swept competition was a 27-9 trouncing of a weak Northwestern entry. Purdue, in turn, swept by OSU and the Wild- cats. The Bucks also set down the Evanston combine. Veteran Wolverine swinger Dick Evans led his teammates with a 75-75-150, but he had to relinquish medalist honors to balding Purdue senior Dick Wi- bel. The massive Boilermaker star toured the course in a one- over-par 72773-145. He carded a 33 on his final nine holes. Coach Bert Katzenmeyer's char- ges, obviously off-form and erratic, trailed the Riveters by nine points after the morning's action and never got back into the thick of things. * * * CAPTAIN Dean Lind just could- n't get started in the number one singles position and came home Newly appointed night edi- tors on the Daily sports staff are: Paul Greenberg, '54; Neil Bernstein, '54; Ivan Kaye, '54; Dick Lewis, '53; Bob Margolin, '53; Ed Smith, '54 and Rod Cook, '53. with a 78-82-150 effort. This score was easily beaten by Wibel and Frank Cardi, the latter being the Ohio medalist at 151. The rest of the Michigan team, with the exception of Evans and Lowell LeClaire, took the cue from its captain and blew sky- high. Lithe John Fraser, medalist in a triumph over the same Ohio State and Purdue squads three weeks ago, could do no better. than an 86 in the first 18 and an 81 on the second for a 167 total. * * * WARREN GAST, filling in for regular number four performer Russ Johnson, turned in a credit- able 82-83-165 in his maiden out- ing, but rotund Hugh Wright dis- appointed with an 83-81-164 tally sheet. In the morning round, Le- Claire chalked up four birdies while going around in a par-72. But LeClaire faded to a nine- over-pat 81 after lunch and had to take a back seat to oppon- ents Bob Clouse and Norm Dun- lap, both of whom fired 78s. While Michigan was having its worst day of the season, Purdue was showing why Katzenmeyer, and a host of other experts, rate the Voinoff six as the team to beat in the Western Conference Cham- pionships on May 30-31. Not one of the first five Boiler- makers fired above 158. Wibel's 145 led the pack and was follow- ed by freshman Bob Benning, who took 155 strokes. Norm Dunlap and 18-year-old freshman Don Al- bert came next with 157 swings each, while Jack Hesler rounded out the sparkling showings with a 158. Special To The Daily CHAMPAIGN - Illinois' track squad put a damper on Michi- gan's title dreams outdoors when it downed the Wolverine contin- gent, 741/-57/2, here in Memorial Stadium yesterday afternoon. For the second time in as many meetings between the two teams the Fighting Illini demonstrated clearly that they are the class of the league, despite the claims of the Michigan crew. ONCE AGAIN it was a case of too much Illinois depth. Although the firsts were about evenly split, Illinois taking seven, Michigan six, and one even, the Orange and Blue cleaned up in the placings. To add to Michigan's woes the top performers bearing the Maize and Blue colors didn't live up to expectations. Wolverine Netmen Top Illini.for Third Straight By DICK BUCK Michigan's tennis contingent continued on its winning way yes- terday by subduing Illinois, 7-2, on the Ferry Field courts in one of the longest and coldest meets of the year. The victory provided the netters (Continued from page 1) when the team of Ghise and Lane gave the Spartans their only runs. The splendid second sacker rifled a ground single past shortstop Bruce Haynam to provide cannon fodder for Lane who slammed a tremendous 460 foot homer to left- center. MICHIGAN TOOK four of the six singles events and then cinch- ed the victory by sweeping all three doubles matches. In the number one singles slot, g4l Mann ,showing his usual "easy" form, had little trouble in downing Bob Bennorth, cap- tain of the Illini squad. With the games tied at 3-3 in the first set, Mann caught fire and took the next three to win the set, 6-3. He took an early lead in the second set and finished on top with a similar total, 6-3. Jay Webb, playing in the num- ber five slot, was the only other Wolverine to take his match in two sets. Webb registered 7-5 and 6-1 wins over Illinois' Bud Staf- ford. * s STEVE BROMBERG had to fight from behind to defeat Bob Hoffman of Illinois in the number two match. Bromberg dropped the first set 6-1 and trailed in the sec- ond 4-3, but came back strong to claim it, 6-4. Hoffman cracked in the finale, enabling Bromberg to take an easy 6-1 clincher. Getting his first crack at singles competition this season, junior Bob Curhan came through in the number six slot by beat- ing Bill Dankert, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, to provide the fourth singles win. Big Mike Schwartz fell victim to the racquet of Illinois' Fred Most as he dropped the first set, 2-6, came back in the second, 6-3, but slumped in the third for a 3-6 loss. * * * IN MUCH the same way Gene Barrack suffered defeat at the hands of Alan (Scot) Farmer in the No. 4 match, 2-6, 6-2, 1-6. John Ross finished third in the half mile, Jack Carroll was bested by Cirilo McSween in the 440, and Van Bruner and Wally Atchison were blanked in the low hurdles. CAPTAIN Don McEwen and Fritz Nilsson kept Michigan in contention with double wins. Mc, Ewen tied with Ross in winning the mile event in 4:17.1. The Flying Canadian also notched another win in the two mile event, turning in a 9:13.5 time. He was followed across the finish line by teammate Bill Hickman. Nilsson rang up wins in the shotput and discuss events, with 54 feet 2 inch and 154 feet 9 inch performances, respectively. Tom Johnson was Michigan's only placer in either event, finishing third in the shot with a 48 foot production. HORACE COLEMAN contributed another Michigan first in the broad jump with a 21 foot 9%/ inch leap. Teammate Milt Mead tied Illinois' Ron Mitchell in the high jump at the 6 feet 5% inch mark. Illinois' crack mile relay team wasn't crack enough to cope with the Wolverine quartet of Al Ran- kin, Bill Konrad, Dan Hickman and Carroll, who carded the final Wolverine first. William Williams of Illinois was the third double winner of the day. Spry Willie captured top honors in both the 100 yard and the 220 yard dashes. His times- 9.8 and 22.1, respectively. Joel McNulty of Illinois won both hurdle events, taking the 120 highs in the good time of 14.2 and the 220 lows in 23.2. Van Bruner and Wally Atchison ran two-three in the highs, but neither placed in the lows. * * * MILE RUN--1. Ross and McEwen, Michigan (tie); 3.
