TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1952 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Hawkeyes Trample Maize an Blue Cage rs, 82-5 Iowa, Illini Still Knotted In BigTen Special to The DaiLy IOWA CITY-Iowa's Hawkeyes kept pace with Illinois in the Big Ten basketball race last night by handing Michigan a decisive 82-59 setback. The victory was the seventh in eight league contests for the Hawkeyes, while the loss dropped the Wolverinec to one-half game from the loop cellar with a 2-6 record.. IOWA was led by 6' 8" center Chuck Darling, whose 29 points gave him a new school record of 405 points, six more than Murray Weir's season total set four years ago. The Wolverines jumped off to an early lead, but, the home team went ahead a few seconds before the end of the first quar- ter. Michigan seemed to be in the contest until halftime when the teams walked off the court sepa- rated only by eight points. Three quick baskets by Darling put the Hawkeyes 22 points ahead shortly after the third period began, and Iowa coach Bucky O'Connor be- gan to substitute freely. MICHIGAN scoring honors went to Tom Tiernan who collect- ed 12 points on four field goals and the same number of free throws. Captain Jim Skala and guard Don Eaddy also hit double figures by collecting 11 points and 10 tallies, respectively. Coach Ernie McCoy tried in vain to get some scoring punch in the front line by using a total of six forwards. Milt Mead played the entire contest at center for the Maize and Blue. Cagers Vacate Basement As MSC, Wildcats Fall An even split in four between semesters basketball tilts enabled Coach Ernie McCoy's cagers to emerge from the Big Ten cellar and threaten three teams for leadership of the second division. But the Wolverine hopes were weakened by the loss of freshmen Bob Jewell, Ralph Kauffman and Dick Powless. The trio was de- clared ineligible for second semes- ter play due to scholastic difficul- ties. THE WOLVERINES s c o r e d their most decisive victory by trouncing Michigan State, 50-36, in a thrill-filled struggle at Yost Field House. In chalking up its first Wes- tern Conference success, Michi- gan packed more punch in a 21- point third period than it could muster in a meagre 12-point output for the entire first half. Freshman guard Don Eaddy and sophomore center Milt Mead ignited the third period surge which caught the Spartans with a minute to go. EADDY found the range with two long set shots just before the session ended to give the Wolver- ines a 31-28 margin which they never relinquished. Michigan dropped a two-point home court decision to Northwes- tern and then travelled to Evans- ton to snatch a two-point win from the Wildcats. Paced by Chicago forward Larry Dellefield, Northwestern held off a last-minute Maize and Blue rally to top the Wolverines, 59-57. Following deadlocks of 19-19 at the quarter and 33-33 at the half, Northwestern took a 54-40 lead with four minutes left in the third stanza and held the Wolverines at bay the rest of the way. Michigan overcame a 13-point Northwestern advantage to defeat the Wildcats, 71-69,,on the Evans- ton hardwood. The Maize and Blue rallied to knot the count at 68-all with three minutes to go, and clinched the contest a minute later as Captain Jim Skala, high scorer with 21 tallies, hit from the floor with a one-hander. Diminutive Doug Lawrence added an insurance free throw in the waning seconds. In a non-contest test following a 12-day layoff, Michigan dropped a 64-57 decision to Marquette at Milwaukee. The Wolverine matmen were never headed as they grabbed off six of eight matches, with only Snip Nalan and Captain Bud Hol- combe biting the dust. In the first between semesters meet, Toledo took it on the chin from the Wolverines, 20-8 as the Rockets' Lanzi brothers carne through in the two heavi- er weights and garnered all of Toledo's points. Next Michigan defeated an al- ways powerful Purdue team, 21-3 in the first home meet of the season. Jack Moreno, a Boiler- maker veteran, salvaged the only Purdue win.
