THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE !V 4- Cottons, Toppers Will Mark 4rrival of Warm Weather COOLER TENNIS GAMES: Poodle, Pony Tail Haircuts Suited for Spring Coats . .. By ROBERTA MacGREGOR A sure sign of coming warm weather is the increasing number of new spring coats which are be- ing displayed in the stores and in fashion magazines. New fabrics are being featured this year's coats along with w varieties of the old "stand-* by," wool. y One of, these new fabrics is Dynel, a fluffy fleece-like material that can be machine washed but hot ironed. FAILE is also being featured khis spring, especialy in the long, fitted coats. There are several rayon com- inations appearing in new coats, These are / particularly popuar combinations for the duster. The coat fashions this spring 'eature a combination of the old and the new. AMONG THE traditional styles are toppers that seem to be per- ennial favorites. They are being featured with flare backs, some in French designs and others in the Limple fingertip style. One of the unusual new spring coats is the all wool Maharajah crepe. It features removable white pique trim and is made in three styles-fitted, topper, and box coat. Wool checks and tweeds are ery popular this year. They are being especially featured in the 'casual full length coats. * . ONE CHECK is made into a lollarless coat with wool suede facing along the neckline and down the front. A pointed collar, diagonal patch pockets and rayon taffeta lining are featured in a tweed coat. One of the new comers on the scene of spring coats is the very short coat. Most of the short 'shorties are about waist length and are made in either nubbed wool, slubbed wool or the smooth wool. J The short coats usualy button to the, waist, and many are made yn bright colors. , As usual in fashions, new ma- terials are used in traditional patterns and new styles are made of traditional materials. However, spring coats this year do offer a great deal of variety in both ma- terial and styling. Dresses . . By ATHENA SAVAS Although the Michigan coed may only wear her cottons for a small part of the year, the de- partment stores and designers conspire to tempt her into buying her wares early. Cottons again will be bright and gay to match the first spring days. Stripes, plaids or solid col- ored dresses trimmed with pique are being shown by many stores. * * * ONE SILKY textured cotton features push up sleeves and small pearl buttons on the bodice with a large gathered skirt. The full skirted style is indi- cative of the many summer clothes being shown in the dis- play windows. If skirts are not gathered, they use the still pop- ular unpressed Pleats. Combed cotton dimity is fea- turned by another designer. Keep- ing crisp with a permanently starched finish, one dress comes with a matching finely striped cotton corduroy jacket.- * * * VARYING FROM the stripes, plaids and pastels are the many new candy colored separates com- ing in embossed cotton which stays fresh looking for a long time. Practical to the coed becapse they may be easily switched around to stretch a wardrobe, some separates combine a cir- cular flared skirt with sleeve- less blouses. Rhinestone, pearls and demure collars add to their youthful appearance. Bold colors and prints are util- ized in some of the quilted sep- arates that have been on store racks in preparation for spring. ONE QUILTED skirt is shown with a quilted top made like a halter which comes to points over the flared skirt. Both the pieces are faced with a solid matching' color. One multicolored calico print is used in a quilted doll waisted skirt and matching weskit. In contrast to the heavier ma- terial quilted in the Jacket and top, a light cotton blouse with long gr push up sleeves make it an appropriate ensemble for the warm days ahead. Another quilted outfit combines a sunback dress with a bolero that may be reversed. In contrast to the checked skirt and bodice, the bolero is backed with picolay-type cotton. By KATHY ZEISLER With spring in the offing, many fashion experts predict a continu- ation of the trefias started last winter in women's hairdos. The pony tail and poodle cut, made familiar in the fall and winter of 1952, have a number of qualities that will make them adaptable for summer. * * * THEY ARE easy to take care of. Everyday vigorous brushing to 'distribute natural oils and an occasional warm olive massage keep the tresses gleaming. Run- ing a comb through them is all that's required to keep the two styles looking neat. Another feature of the pony tail and poodle cut that will interest the coed is their ver- satility-.they can be either dressed up or down. For playtime the shortness of the poodle cut keeps it out of the way for fast tennis games, and is easy to tuck into a swiuning cap. THE PONY TAIL is a boon to the sport-loving woman because it will stay in place for a long time. And wearing the hair off the neck in summer is a recog-; nized method of keeping cooler. For evening wear both styles may be dressed up to fit the occasion. Rhinestones and vel- vet ribbons are especially popu- lar. Fashion experts, this spring, have taken into consideration the woman who doesn't want quite such different hairdos. They ad- vise dressing the hair to match the rest of a woman's wardrobe. * * * TO FIT the femininity of light summer cottons and bembergs, curls piled high on the head are recommended. For this the hair should be cut not more than three and one-half inches long. Simple hairdos are appreciated by the working woman. With lit- tle time to bother with grooming, the easy-to-fix quality is impor- tant on the summer job. 1952 spring fashions are de- signed to bring out the smartness and taste of the woman as well as highlight her features and wardrobe.
