i A THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1952 ***Now Tennis, Canoeing Beckon Students Cowlook To Spark WoolensKeep in Spotlight for Spring Season E Variety in Style, Colors Offered In SportsClothes By MARILYN CAMPBELL With, the arrival of spring in Ann Arbor, students begin desert- ing classes and studies for the ten- nis courts, the canoe livery, the bicycle shop, for hikes along the river, picnicking and for just plain loafing. Attractive sport clothes are then practically a necessity for all co- eds. This year's selection inclules a variety of styles and colors. PLAIN OLD-FASHIONED blue jeans can now be found in many different colors, including pastel blue, black, green and red, which are accented by white stitching. Also popular with University co- eds are western-styled jeans, cop- ied after those of the cowboy. The tennis enthusiasist has a variety of outfits to choose from. Shorts of practically all colors and styles can be purchased in the local stores. "Boy shorts" with or without cuffs are often seen on tennis players. Bright chartreuse, Scotch plaid, striped, fashionable navy blue, white or any other color can be found. The material in these shorts is usually of cotton denim or whipcord. MANY COEDS nake use of blue jeans worn out at the knees by cutt'ing off the legs of the jeans to a length suitable for shorts. Peddle pushers have not only become popular for bicycling, but are now being worn for hik- ing, picnics and to relax in..Here, too, a variety of colors and ma- terials are available. ,Crinkle- resistant cotton in bright "cir- cus colors" and wool plaid for wear on cool evenings are fea- tured. Plaid and cotton blouses design- '55 FashionScene Revolutionary Designer Will Focus Unusual Collection on Colleg MOSCOW-buyers from all over the world flooded this noted fa- shion center today as Andrei Kar- mazov displayed his collection of spring styles at the beautiful Bal- inski showroom, just off Red Square. The fashion spotlight of the col- lection is focussed on the college woman. The keynote for 1955- "the cowlook." * * * COMMENTING on this, his lat- est trend, the revolutionary design- er stated with gutteral intonations, "We have had the doggy look, the poodle cut, the horse tail and doe eyes; the day of the cow is come." The crowded / display room rang with applause as his first number was shown. Pirouetting down the ramp, model Greta Ta- varishscha displayed a costume for the working girl or the stay- at home student; overalls, but with a distinctly Karmasovy touch. Slit to the knee on both sides for greater freedom of action, the navy blue one-piecer is adorned enticingly with "Worker of the World" slogans. To be worn with this is a red synthetic woolen shirt with zippered front. FOR THE sporting woman, Kar- mazov has included in his collec- tion a wide display of velvet ace- tate shorts with matching or con- trasting jackets. Crush resistant, non-wrinkleable, the fabric is shown in a veritable rainbow of e Women in Future color. Most popular combination is a purple short suit with the big news color for spring - vibrant vodka. Vibrant vodka, acclaimed byc the fashion world as "moreI heady than champagne, more burning than burguindy," made its appearance often today. "For evening wear, vodka will be the toast of the town," a leading buyer predicted. "We plan to stock it in all proofs-or fashions, I mean." FABRIC, FABRIC and more fa- bric hits the eye when one gazes at the collection. For, with the re- cent advent of "steriltone"-the new processing which requires neither washing, ironing n o r hanging-the designer of today need not concern himself with mi- lady's problems of maintenance. Swirling skirts for evening, for the classroom, for casual wear, these are the trade marks of Karmazov. "They, decrease the chassis," one model inform- ed me, "and release one from the confines of her girdle--although, with the new super-stretchable, skin scintillating models, even a girdle is no hardship." The nipped in waist? Gone for- ever in the collection. Even to the fashion layman, it is evident that such a waistline is incompatible with the "cow look." And thus it is that Karmazov's designs feature reoccuringly the frock blouse, simple and straight--falling from shoulder to waist. Although the coed looks anxi- ously toward spring as the time for a switch from winter clothes of wool to those of lighter cotton or the many new synthetic ma- terials, the fashion world does not comletlyignore spring woolens. Long spring coats will be found in a new nubby textured wool that is simply designed. The full cuffed sleeves are cut with the four pan- eled body of the coat for a smooth shoulder line. ANOTHER VERSION of the ever popular short or fingertip length coat comes as a tweedy wool. With a mandrain collar, the sleeves are cut with the straight across yolk. The back is flared with a center pleat adding to the full- ness. A coat dress in a fine wool with a special weave is also sim- ply styled. It combines a wisp- waisted princess style line with a tiny back belt. Buttons cross the dress diagonally from a small pointed collar. A suit suitable for almost any occasion is styled for spring in tail- ored wool gabardine. The jacket is of medium length with the still favored soft rounded shoulders. The skirt is slim under the panel- ed designed jackets. ANOTHER CASUAL suit that indicates the trend in the spring clothes is of ribbed worsted. Over a plain slim skirt is shown a car- digan jacket of plaided worsted. Belted in front, the back of the jacket swings out to form a deep yoke. A color that is being featured in the woolen coats and suits is a new treatment of turquoise. Accessories are also predicted by designers to utilize spring colors. Shoes, purses, gloves or scarves will add brightness to new wardrobes. For those coeds who prefer to do their spring planning of cloth- and blouses that will look like ma- es in the new light materials, the terials of other fibers.
