An atmosphere of cleanliness and friendliness filled the center as each member of the unit per- formed his job in the smoothly run organization. REGISTRATION of each stu- dent, faculty member or non- academic employe is checked first, Mrs. Ethyl Atkinson, executive secretary of the Washtenaw Coun- ty Red Cross explained. Those who have already turned in a pledge card have been scheduled singly or by groups. People who have not turned in cards but wish to donate may simply drop in at the center and register there. At the registration table stu- dents indicate their preference as to what the blood will be used for: the armed forces, replace- ment of blood used by a mem- ber of the family or a friend or a use to be determined by the Red Cross. Thus far most stu- dents have indicated the armed services as their choice Volunteer doctors or medical students then take the donor's temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin test. A complete history of previous illnesses, oper- ations and allergies is prepared at this point. About20 people operate the blood center, all volunteers ex- cept a nurse, custodian and technician. Some travel with the mobile unit from Lansing, others are students or employed at the University hospital. After the case record has been thoroughly checked the actual do-! nation begins. After the pint of blood has been secured a small! amount is placed in a "pilot tube" attached to the bottle as an indi- cation of the blood type. The bottle of blood is then packed in crushed ice for shipment to Lansing where it will be pro- cessed. Following the donation coffee and sandwiches are served while the patient rests for 15 to 20 min- utes. The whole process takes about half an hour, Mrs. Atkin- son said. The clinic will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10ap.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday until March 21. NEW CURRICULUM: Family Living Program Cited *As Injuring Marriage Series The University's new family liv- ing program has been cited as a possible cause for the decline in popularity of the Marriage Series, by Assistant Dean of Students Ivan Parker, who is in charge of the series. Parker recalled that at one time so many people wanted to sub- scribe to the Lecture series that a priority system was set up giv- ing seniors and graduate stude;its ticket priority. Because of this demand, the University decided to add a series of credit courses under Assistant Dean of Students James H. Rob- ertson, which would cover the topic material of the lecture series. After the program was set up, the Marriage series showed an un- expected drop in ticket sales. Included in the new program are psychology 78, parent-child r . ....
