SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1951 THE MICHIGAN DAILY _______________________________________________________________________________ U m . IFC Will Entertain Children At Hill Auditorium Tuesday Santa Claus Will Give Packages of Candy; Magician, Juggler, Novelaires To Perform Saint Nick will be on hand to wish everyone a very "Merry Christmas" at the IFC Children's Party which will be held Tuesday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. in Hill Auditorium. The party is an annual event sponsored by the Interfraternity Council for the grade-school chil- dren of Ann Arbor. This tradition began back in the 1930's, and since then it has become one of the permanent services of the organi- zation. The men work long and hard to give the children this pre-Christ- mas party. Approximately 4000 children are expected. They will be entertained with a program, and then pack- ages of candy will be given to all of them by a jolly, fat Santa Claus, who will remind them that Christmas is almost here, so "you better be good, cause Santa Claus is coming to town." SAE, KATs PresentParty Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Alpha Theta presented their sec- ond annual Christmas party last Tuesday evening for thirty-two children chosen by the Salvation Army. One SAE member and one The- ta went on a shopping expedition to buy a gift for each of the chil- dren. Christmas stockings filled with candy and other small arti- cles were provided for the children, and the SAE pledges entertained the youngsters with a skit, "The Night Before Christmas." Other entertainment for the group included the presence of Santa himself, portrayed by Swede Lauritsen, carol singing led by the Thetas and a Christmas story read by Swede Swanson. Party chair- men were Sally Gresham and Gene Bohi. Board Positions Will BeElective Positions on the women's Board of Representatives will now be elective. Up until this time the Board was automatically composed of the presidents of the houses. At a meeting last Wednesday it was decided that the new members of the board will be elected from each group. The president may be the elect- ed representative. Dear to the hearts of children is the magicians act, so at the party there will be a magic show. There will also be a juggling exhi- bition. The Novelaires will be featured on the program. The committee for the dance is composed of Bruce MacGuire, gen- eral chairman; Bob Rose, publi- city; Art Durr, entertainment; Tom Mericle, refreshments; Ralph Griffith, ushers, Bert Wicking, building and seating arrangements and Jim McInerney, decorations. CANDLE-LIGHTING: Chanukah Holiday Festivities To BeHeld by Hillel, IZFA A party, co-sponsored by Hillel and IZFA, will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the League to celebrate the Chanukah holiday. Chanukah is in observance of the triumph of the Jews over the tyrant Antiochos in 162 B.C. A special candle-lighting ceremony symbolizing the sacred light which burned for eight days during the restoration of the Temple of Jeru- salem that was defiled by Antio- chos will be performed as part of the program. According to the story of the holiday, Antiochos, during his ty- rannical rule, had committed great sacrilege by letting pigs into the holy temple and had put out the eternal light which was always to be kept burning. After the overthrow of Antiochos by a handful of Jews led by Judas the Maccabeus, an attempt was made to restore the temple. How- ever, only enough oil could be lo- cated to keep the Chanukah light burning for one day. The restora- tion was started, however, and continued for eight days. The light miraculously continued to burn throughout the seven days until finally more oil was found. In celebration of the original occurrence a special candle is lit and prayers said on each of the seven preceding Chanukah day, Dec. 24. Refreshments in the form of cider and potato latkes will be served at the party. This will be followed by singing and dancing. The party will follow the weekly Sunday evening Kosher delicates- san supper at 5:30 p.m. at the Sigma Alpha Mu house. League Council Members of League Council will meet at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the Undergraduate Office of the League.
