¢ SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1951 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE NINE ____________________________________________________ PAGE NINi -I Novel Present PopularNow Students May Buy Unusual Xmas Gifts By MARILYN CAMPBELL With only 13 shopping days left until Christmas, many students are still wondering what to buy for members of the family or for that favorite friend. There are numerous novel gifts that may be given instead of the ordinary "tie for Dad" type of present. * * * MOTHERS would probably ap- preciate a gift certificate for a permanent wave and a complete set of beauty treatments that she never quite had enough extra money for in her budget. Or per- haps a canary to brighten her work day with songs would be welcomed. e A season ticket for local bas- ketball, football or baseball games would be an appropriate gift for a sports-loving father. To make morning shaving eas- ier, a shaving brush that holds lather has been put on the mar- ket. The handle is turned and the lather pops up on the end of the brush. For that ever hungry little brother, a home size malted milk mixer is available, or a limited charge account at the local ice cream parlor. Dancing or driving lessons could be made available for a teen-age boy. * * * A DRESSING TABLE skirt and matching dust ruffle for her bed would be a welcome gift to any teen-age girl. Women of all ages like parties, so a luncheon for her friends at a hotel or restaurant would be warmly received by "lit- tle sister." A ukulele, a set of water col- ors, a half-dozen drams of dif- ferent perfumes, or a book on 3 how to tell fortunes are "dif- ferent" gifts for the college woman. The college man would prob- ably be enthused about monthly credit at a cleaning and pressing shop or at a nearby grocery store. One of the new Scotch plaid cumberbunds would brighten his tuxedo. SOME OF THE reallyhunusual gift suggestions that have been advertised nationally include an electric toothbrush which oper- ates at a rate of 120 up-and-down strokes per minute, or an eye glass case that polishes glasses when they're put in the case. Along with the many lighters, one has been designed that actu- ally takes three puffs of a cigar- '~ette after it lights it. For poker or horse race fans, there is a slide-stick gadget which gives the odds on a bet. Just set it at what kind of poker hand is being held, and the answer will tell the player whether to raise, stay or drop out. One of the most unusual gifts offered is an armored wallet which is said to withstand a .45 caliber slug from a sub-machine gun. -Daily-Malcolm Shatz XMAS PRESENT-Fred Hollis, left, and Dick Knopf welcome the new addition to the Lambda Chi house; Ivy, a friendly collie. CHRISTMAS COLLIE: Lambda Chis Get Early Gift 'U' Men's Poll May Aid Coed To Select Gift By BEA JOHNSON What to give your guy for Christmas is a question that coeds face every Yuletide season. In a recent poll men on campus were asked "what would you like your girl to give you for Christ- mas?" The men expressed a desire for everything from a yacht to "five bow ties." "All I want for Christmas is a trust fund," declared Pete Oak '53 while Irwin Roth '52 claimed that a black car with "a not too hard but not too soft top" would fill his needs. The more realistic men revealed that they secretly wished for a pair of handknit argyles or "beer mug" sox. Pictures, lighters, and wallets also appeared on the list of gift wishes. Although blue is predominantly the favorite, gray, tan, red and brown cashmere sweaters were the most common gift men would like to find in their stockings on De- cember 25. A blue and silver striped tie was considered a blessing from the ties that "Aunt Sara" would probably force on a poor nephew. Initialed cuff links in silver or gold to go with French cuffs are also male favorites. Some unhappy men just want a date for Christmas, but Jerry Free- man '54 hopes to receive ear plugs for his roommate. Musically minded men would like to receive instruments such as a banjo or uke while medical stu- dents want cadavers ("stiffs") to practice on during vacation. Coeds expressed a desire for everything but "two front teeth" when asked "what would you like to receive from your boyfriend this Christmas?" "One man, good sized, wrapped in cellophane and tied with a ribbon" is what Jackie Hirt, '53, would like to find under the tree on Christ- mas day. w Mary Ellen Von Hermmann, '52, just wants a little something like a Lincoln Continental convertible in Dartmouth green equipped with red leather seats and a phono- graph. Long sleeved cashmere sweaters lead at the top of the coed gift wishes. Pullover sweaters ranked higher than cardigans. Light blue was the favorite color with forest green and grey following in that order. Diamonds and lingerie would be accepted from fiances, but records and candy would fill the bill from "just friends." "Sugar Daddies" should give mink coats but a Michigan blanket from "Joe College" will OK. 'U'Coeds Tell Christmas Wants By KATHY ZEISLER A dog's life on campus is likely to be a short one, members of Lambda Chi Alpha discovered af- ter their mascot of a few short weeks got run over by a truck. However, the Sigma Nus, hearing of the unfortunate accident, decid- ed to replace him. Walt Denison was appointed to do some research on the prob- lem and consulted his little brother over the Thanksgiving holidays. He came back the day of the Ohio State game with Ivy, a collie pup about the same age as the deceased dog. Only a few ill effects were KLINE'S. 306-10 SO. MAIN ST. caused by the ride from Detroit to Ann Arbor in the back seat of a car, but Ivy spent the weekend happily in the basement of the Sigma Nu house. Monday evening Nov. 26, they tied a red ribbon and a Christmas card around his collar and left him at the Lambda Chi house. When Ivy wandered into the dining room he caused a mild dis- turbance, he resembled so closely their other mascot. Later that evening, after inten- sive investigation to discover where Ivy came from, the Lambda Chis called on the Sigma Nus to express their thanks.
