With the wide range of cards now on the market, there are cards to fit every taste, ranging from the traditional to the modern. A POPULAR trend this year are cards done in a modern abstract style. These depict everything from jolly Santa Clauses and Christmas trees to devout religious scenes. Color variation is another new trend in today's cards. Breaking away from the usual red and green, one can find cards done in almost every hue. Some manufacturers have also COLORFUL CHANGES: Stylish Winter Accessories BringSparkle To Fashions By LORRAINE BUTLER cuffs and collar or a bla With the holiday season comes a beige textured taffeta sca renewed flare for wearing various a sleeve on one end, fringe colorful accessories, on the other are suitable f Stoles and scarves are two of the ning wear. biggest fashion hits this year, with some getting so large that they FRINGED STOLES m practically conceal the dresses. match the skirt worn with ~ ful blouse will no doubt 1 ONE OF THIS season's new of- popular during the cold ferings is the plan of pulling the season. printed scarf through the cap Stick pins set with br sleeve of a plain colored jumper stne are se holhlb and securing it with a large pin or stones are used for holdi clasp. scarves in place or just fo A silk square with a leaf motif oration. is a favorite for achieving the Another attractive acces cape effect by tying the ends complement the holiday o through a link chain. the tiniy beret of hand si The coachman stole in checked satin and small matching e7 wool jersey, designed by Irma Ki- bag. gere, French designer, has been in DESIGNED especially for great demand since the beginningupEsiGne . eseble of fall. A good way to accomplish this often heard wish might be through record gifts. Today an enormous selection of LP's, 45RPM's and standards are available in record stores for any taste ranging from Tchaikovsky to Teagarden. In response to widespread pub- lic demand, RCA Victor has been giving out items on LP from its "Treasury of Immortal Perform- ances." Recently, two "Treasury" releases made record news, with Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Chopin's Nocturnes, Beethoven's Concerto No. 4 and Debussy's "Pell'eas and Melisande." The first complete recording of Gershwin's blues classic, "Porgy and Bess," (Decca) reveals that the six sides of LP still sparkle with their usual flavor. For jazz enthusiasts, Columbia has recently released an album en- titled, "The Bessie Smith Story," which contains some of the best jazz of the '20's and early '30's. During her brief, reckless life, Bessie was the rage of the "blues" world. This collection includes such instrumentalists as Arm- strong, Fletcher Henderson, Ben- ny Goodman and Jack Teagarden. added sparkle to their cards to give them a bright, distinctive look. * * * SUCH FAMOUS artists as Nor- man Rockwell, Grandma Moses, and Winston Churchill have had their work reproduced on cards lovely enough to frame. Or for those with their own artistic talent, cards can be fashioned at home with a mini- mum of expense. It adds a per- sonalized touch to each card and can also be lots of fun for the creator. Those without artistic talent but who still like the personal touch, can take a jaunt to the local pho- tographer and have their pictures reproduced on their Christmas cards. * * . * FAMILY GROUPS or pets make appropriate scenes for this type of card, or perhaps the photog- rapher can offer suggestions. Those who like to have every card different and yet don't like to shop around looking for varia- tion, will find many boxed assort- ments which are both inexpensive and attractive. No matter what the taste may be, students are advised not to wait until the last minute to send them out because of the big rush at the post office. Delivery on "late" cards is often delayed un- til after the holidays. I'., STOLEN STOLES: Current Fashion Fads Based On Styles of Ancient Times By MARTHA PAPO Although fashions always por- tray ideas as "the newest thing," most of our present fashions are borrowed from the past, with very little change. Modern stoles are nothing new, in fact they had their origin as the ancient Roman toga. They are now used to a slightly different purpose, but it might be said that we "took the shirt off the Roman's back." A recent topic in the fashion plates is the large medallion. As costume jewelry it is something new, but it had its origin during the Medieval period. At that time they were the family crests of the knights. The large crests on belts and purses are even reproduced in "an- tique gold finish," to give them that old, aged look. From their ap- pearance, they might have just been taken off the shield of some armor-clad knight. Although they are never as large as those found on a knight's shield, they range in size from that of a half dollar to about the size of a small saucer. Most Qf the medallions have touches of bright enamel, although some are all old gold or silver finish.
