THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1951 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIVE THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1951 PAGE FIVE .,'....... 'HUB OF CAMPUS': Constitution of Union Forms Foundation of Administration (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a series of articles regarding the general organization of the Union management and student govern- ment.) By AL LUCKOFF "The center of social and recre- ational activities at the Univer- sity" is the description given of the Union in most campus hand- books. Though most students are fa- miliar with the functions and fa- cilities of the Union, relatively few Square Dance To BeTonight Square dance enthusiasts will be "swinging their partners" at the Square Dance Festival to be held from 8 to 11 p.m. today in Waterman Gymnasium. The Festival, sponsored by the Department of Physical Education for Men, is featuring the calling of the nationally known Ed Gilmore. Instruction wil be given for each dance, since the program is de- signed for beginners as well as square dance experts. Gilmore, who has been guest caller for the Square Dance Fes- tival for two consecutive years, will call many square dances, among which will be his own com- positions, the Yucaipa Twister, the Yucaipa Roll Away and the California Whirl. Admission for the Festival is set at $1.25 per couple and $.65 per person. Judiciary Counci Members Clarify UniversityRules I people have any knowledge of how the "hub of the campus'' is run or by whom. THE BASIS of Union adminis- tration is the constitution, which has been in existence since the inception of the Union. A move- ment to amend this constitution with regard to selection of student officers was started in the spring of 1950 but died when advocates of the amendment failed to mus- ter a quorum to attend the meet- ing. There are indications that new amendments may be of- fered sometime during the cur- rent school year. The constitution places author- ity for supervision and control of all Union activities upon an 18- man board of directors, nine mem- bers of which are to be students. *~ * * THE STUDENT members in- clude the president and recording secretary of the Union, president of the Men's Judiciary Council and six vice-presidents chosen by the student body in the annual spring all-campus elections. The remaining members are the dean of students; financial secretary of the Union, chosen by the Board of Regents; the general secretary of the Univer- sity alumni association; a mem- ber of the Boardof Regents, se- lected by the Board; two alumni members picked by the alumni association and two faculty members, chosen by the Uni- versity faculty senate. The actual operation of the Union is delegated to the stu- dent government which directs student activities and to the paid business staff which handles the business of running the guest room, restaurant and other com- mercial facilities. For members, guests, and alumni.
