1 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1951 PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY I 1I P~RIZE WINNER: Versatile Museum Head Enjoys Three-fold Life By HELENE SIMON As an administrator, teacher and painter, Prof. Jean Paul Slus- ser, director of the Museum of Art, is leading "a busy but enjoyable existence." Having occupied his present po- sition since 1946, Prof. Slusser re- gards his role as a "fascinating responsibility." * * * THE ARTIST IS "very pleased" with the student response to the museum exhibits this year. He be- lieves that students are becoming increasingly interested in the ex- hibits, which have emphasized modern art. Of course, some students just don't take to contemporary art, he grinned. "But we're living in the twen- tieth century and we have to know what's going on in our time." * * * UNDOUBTEDLY, the artist is well-qualified for his job. Though he originally was interested in lit- erature, which he studied at the University, Prof. Slusser became fascinated with the artistic at- mosphere of Munich, Germany and decided to study the history of art. His decision made, Prof. Slus- ser threw himself into the study of art at the Museum School, in Boston, later at the Art Stu- dents League of New York, and finally, in Munich. His hard work and ingenuity eventually brought results and * * * President's Talk Ends Celebration (Continued from Page 1) AT THE convocation, honorary degrees were presented to three college alumni. Dean Rogers was awarded a Doctor of Science de- gree and Master of Science de- grees were awarded to Charles Rudolph Walgreen, Jr., and Julia Esther Emanuel. Walgreen is president of the drug store chain that bears his name. Miss Emanuel, a retail pharma- cist of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, was given the master's degree just 62 years after she earned her phar- maceutical chemist degree. Read- ily admitting her 81 years, Miss Emanuel is an active alumna, and will stay on campus for the home- coming festivities. Kefauver Asks U.S. Struggle AgainstCrime (Continued from Page 1) marked.
