NCAA and Intercollegiate compe-; tition in the 200-yard backstroke, a new event this year. He won I it in a rousing 2:07.3, and an easy' length and a half over Dick Tho- man of Yale, his nearest rival.' THEN JOHN MARSHALL of Yale stroked to a 2:05.6 220-free- style and broke the intercollegiate record in doing it. Teammates Wayne Moore and James McLane gave him his closest competition, placing second and third respec- tively. Michigan State left its mark on the meet by breaking one, in the 404.yard freestyle relay. The firm of David Hoffman, James.Quigley, Clark Scholes, and George Hoogerhyde blasted the hopes of a threatening Yale quartet of Don Sheff, /Larry Munson, Frank Chamberlain, and Ray Reid by a tenth of a second, .winning in 3:26.7, an intercollegiate record. Another tight race came in the 200-yard breast stroke. , Robert Brawner of Princeton outreached OSU's Jerry Holan in 2:18.6. Stew Elliot of Michigan placed sixth in a closely bunched field wi tht' the time of 2:23.5. CLARK SCHOLES of MSC beat out Iowa State's Robert Brown by ,2 second in the 59-yard freestyle. At the end of last night's events, Yale, as expected, was leading in team scoring with 42 points. Second, surprisingly,. comes Michigan State, with 36, and trailing comes OSU, last years champion, with 27 points. Michigan has 1 point, by virtue of Elliott's breastroke perform- ance. The Wolverines will swim again today, with Elliott competing in the 100-yard breastroke, Bennie Kahn in the 100-yard back, Jim Hartmann in high diving, and El- liot, Kahn, and captain Dave Neisch is the medley relay. Finals of the championship and consolation brackets will begin at 7:30 p.m. First Wolverine to win his way into the finals was Norm Mangouni, 121-pound Ann Ar- borite, who stoi ed Nicholas Redfield of Cranlrook, 10-3, in their semi-final bout. Harold Holt. defeated Richard Thornton of Michigan State College on a referee's decision after both wrestlers had wres- tied to a 4-4 standoff at the end of regulation time in their 165- pound semi-final bout. Dick O'Shaughnessy earned the right to compete in the finals of the 175-pound division by pin- ning MSC's Roy Mieszowski in the semis last night. O'Shaugh- nessy meets Michigan State's Low- ell 'Kage tonight for the 175- pound crown. TigersWhi Cards 10-4 With 15 Hits LAKELAND, Fla.-(P)-The De- troit Tigers used a combination of some fancy pitching and robust hitting to snap a three-game los- ing streak yesterday and defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 10 to 4, in an exhibition contest that end- ed the Tigers' stay at Lakeland. Everyone in the Tiger start- ing lineup except Johnny Groth took part in a 15-hit attack. Meantime, Freddy Hutchinson and Diz Trout were limiting the Cards to nine. The game was the second this season that the Tigers have play- ed errorless ball. It helped bring them their fourth exhibition win against 10 defeats and a second this season over the Cards.
