THE MICHIGAN DAILY PA Changes Seen In Suit Parade This Season Conversion Makes Three New Outfits From One Ensemble By MAD DAVIS The ever popular basic suit need no longer be worn only to football games. This spring suits, while becoming more feminine, have also changed their makeup with a new change- about scheme based on a three- piece outfit. A SUIT,.a dress, and a dinner dress are combined in the en- semble, all for the price of one outfit. The side-wrapped skirt and the petal-hipped jacket can be worn together as a suit. The camisole top may be added to be worn as a dress with a jacket. For a short dinner dress, the jacket is left at home in the closet. The favorite material for the outfit is faille, in any color. THE SAME TRICK is used in a combination featuring a bat- winged jacket, a narrow slit skirt, and a cuffed, bow-trimmed bodice. Suits are also being shown in four piece combinations, includ- ing the suit itself, a weskit and a. contrasting skirt. Usually shown in checked sum- mer wool, the extra skirt is in a plain color, but the weskit is checked. * *4 * LIGHT PASTEL PLAIDS are in the news this spring, not only in the ensembles mentioned above, but also in the perennial suit and coat combination. The coat can be worn as a spring topper with other outfits. Femininity is the byword in the suit silhouette for the season. *Featuring smaller shoulders, a nipped-in waist and shorter jac- kets, this year's suit no longer re- sembles the broad-shouldered stern-lined man's suit. FLARED HIPS add to the pic- ture, and leather belts are shown as the perfect complement to such a suit on a 'dress-up' occasion. - Skirts are much shorter this spring, reaching just below the knee. Still being offered in the popular pencil slim style, the skirts are tighter, or at any rate, seem to be, since they are de- signed as wrap-arounds and sheaths. A favorite trick of the designer this spring is to trace the line of the skirt with buttons, either down the front or on one or both sides. r 44 * * WITH A JACKET that halts at the waistline, the sheath skirt, formerly shown only with formal dresses, is being shown this sea- son in the suit. Very dressy, usually in a plain material, this suit is as appropriate for watching televi- sion, as it is at a cocktail party. Very probably, regardless of the new styles, the basic suit will still be in demand. In plain gabardine, or in glen plaid wool, the simple lines of the suit will compliment any figure, and its wearer will be comfortable at any occasion. Open Shoes of Varied Colors Mark Sprinq, Summer Trend IJ^ By LORRAINE BUTLER. Step into spring and summer with the knowledge of how to choose the right shoe for every occasion. ' New designs in shoes accompany new fashions in suits, dresses and hats. The beauty of an outfit can bA destroyed by a poor shoe selec- tion or its beauty enhanced by the appropriate choice. The open airy look and variety of colors, fabrics and styles are characteristic of 1951's shoe fash- ions. MORE OPEN AND decorative this year is the reliable pump. Open shank pumps are a favorite style although frequently the pump is styled with a closed back. The spectator is no longer traditional in design. This sea- son the slender graceful specta- tor is able to go many places barred to the shoe of the past. One pair of sling-back specta- tors with closed toes is in bas- sic brown and white. Plaid is a highlight of the new spring styles, found especially in pumps. The simple closed shoe brings gaiety into any wardrobe. The tartan inlay and the deep- polished red calf toe, collar, back and heel adds just the color neces- sary to a plain dark suit or dress. * * * AMONG THE OTHER shoes for day-time wear is the popular suede. Almost any style can be found in suede, from dressy plat- forms to sandals. Shoes in calf, kid and patent are also adopting the new open airy look. The glamorous rep- tile shoe is still a favorite for evening wear. The most popular fashion colors in the dressy shoe are navy, kola brown, blonde, red, beige and plaid. Multi-colored shoes will be out- standing this year. . * * *4 A PAIR OF ankle-strap sandals have uppers in multi-colored kid, a slim heel in solid two tones. Though the toe is closed this shoe is quite airy, A stripping sandal in silver kid will certainly gain attention on summer evenings. The slend- er silver straps secured to polish- ed leather soles sparkle with rhinestone studded cirelets and heels. For casual wear. this summer there is the "Sheath look" in shoes, found in hot orange unlined glazed kid. The entire front of the light flexible shoe is closed, but the sling back is open. * * *4 OTHER CASUALS are fashion- ed in mesh, linen, straw, gingham, denim and plain and printed shan- tung. There is practically unlimit- ed choice-of style in these comfort- able shoes. Black and white, separate or teamed, are important colors this year. Vivid pastels, ombre colors, pale neutrals.and the mauve-to-purple palette will be the most common choices in casual warm weather shoes. The right shoe has been designed for the occasion, whether it be dancing, working, shopping or re- sorting. Cottons Given Metallic Look New Fabric Finish Displayed This Year By ATHENA SAVAS The Swiss textile industry has pioneered for years in the devel- opment of new weaves and metal- lic finishes to alter the appear- ances of cotton fabrics. This year one fabric maker has displayed a new method of me- tallic printing. This metallic fin- ish is so smooth and shiny that it looks like a delicate filigree. Clear cut outlines are given to the most delicately etched motifs. * 4 * THE APPLICATION of a met- allic finish gives a crispness like paper taffeta and a crinkled crush resistant, texture like crepe. It still retains a feathery lightness. The metallic designs are also practical. The printing is dur- able. It can not be peeled or rubbed off, nor will it tarnish. The most remarkable feature is the washability of the metallic cottons. Several prominent American designers are featuring the fabrics in their spring collections. By NAN TAYLOR "Put on your Easter bonnet ... " A sure sign of Spring are gay flowered women's hats. * * * AS SOON AS the sun begins to shine with a warmth, and frees and flowers begin to bud, women put away their winter felts and velvets and begin to sport gay straws. "With all the frills upon it..." Bright color and gay trimming are important in spring hat fash- ions. VELVET TRIM on hats is the most important piece of news in the millinery world this spring. It imparts a neat, smooth look to hats that is especially popu- lar with tailored suits and coats. Flowers are, of course, still es- sential to hat designers, but the trend seems to be toward smaller and more trim flowers and away from the flamboyant posy decora- tion. * * * CHIN VEILS rate high on the list of popular hat features this season. The most popular style is that in which a narrow velvet rib- bon is attached to the bottom of the veil so that it can be tied in a bow at the back of the head. This year, as usual, navy heads the list as the important hat color. It is a good shade as it can be worn with many different colors. It is especially good with the pastel shades.; Coffee and wheat are two shades which are very new and very popu- lar this season. As neutral tones they blend well with almost all colors. " * 4 4 FLOWERS, veil and ribbons can be added to hats in these shades to make them the part of almost any ensemble. Spring sunset, a rosy pink tint, is also something new this year. It has been described by fashion designers as "a color like orange sherbet, which blends well with blues, browns -and greens." A -new trend this spring is lilac and lavender worn with a navy outfit. These colors, as they have a blue tone themselves, pick up and accentuate the highlights of navy. *4 * * LILAC and lavender also are be- ing shown with browns a great deal. Another something new this year is the combination of black and white in mllinery creations. SCINTILLATING SCENTS: SpringBrings New Perfumes By DELORES SILVER As winter woolens are packed away, women's thoughts turn to new perfumes which will enhance their spring wardrobes. The freshness of warmer months demands a light and airy fra- grance, idnlike the heavier per- fumes used for winter. *4 * *4 FASHION MAGAZINES dictate the importance of perfume to mod- ern women. A few drops of scented oil in one's daily bath, followed by the generous use of fragrant bath powder, it is suggested, will create an important foundation for the day's choice of perfume. Toilet water or cologne, lighter variations of perfume, are refresh- ing and may replace, or be used in addition to, a touch of perfume. MANY WOMEN have bottles of perfumes which are reserved for special occasions. The growing ti'end, though, is toward a daily use of scents, much like the use of lip- stick. Perfume, not really a luxury, can be worn and enjoyed every day. With such a multitude and variety of perfumes on the mar- ket, a suitable selection becomes a problem. Fashion experts ad- vise that perfume be selected with infinite care. There are no rules to dictate what scent to use. Many of the fine aromas offered by reputable perfumers should be tested and used for some time before com- parisons or criticisms are made. The choice, then, will be the one which pleases the individu l the most. A HANDY TIP for a harmonious perfume wardrobe is to secure cologne, toilet water, oil, soap, powder and sachet in the same basic fragrance. Not intended for timid dabs behind the ears, say the experts, perfume should be applied gen- erously to the arms, neck and shoulders. And, for a sure-to-be-appreciat- ed Easter gift, perfume or cologne is a wise aili inexpensive choice. YOUR BRADLEY SUIT and COAT v~ tenter of/your Cadter ?
