THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MARCH 4, I;51 lichigan Pucksters Beat MSC, 9 6; uintet Loses * * f Two Records Shattered In Eighteenth Ice Victory By ED WHIPPLE Michigan's usually potent hockey squad turned in a lack-luster per-j formance irn the Coliseum last night, but it was still good enough to whip a weak Michigan State sextet 9-6 and smash two all-time Wolverine season scoring records. Neil Celley bagged three points on one goal and two assists to'be- come the highest scoring Wolver- ine in history for a single season. THE TRICKY left winger assist- ed John Matchefts in the first tally of the game at 4:44 of the firstj period to break Gil Burford's mark of 64, set last year. Also shattered by Michigan's nine goal output was the 1949 standard of 179 goals in one sea- son. AlsBassey meshed a rebound over prostrate Spartan Goalie Del Reid after a shot by Johnny McKennell' at 15:45 of the second stanza for the record breaking seventh Wol- verine marker. * . * CAPTAIN BURFORD followed with two third period tallies that ran the current total to 182, with at least two contests to be played. Matchefts and Bassey ac- counted for the initial Maize and Blue scores prior to the ten- minute mark of the opening per- iod before Connie Buck of MSC took advantage of a defensive letdown to even the count at 16:46, cashing a setup by Ray Brooks. CELLEY KEPT UP the good work at 7:44 when he took a pass from Matchefts at center ice, out- skated the defense, and put the rubber behind Reid with a beauti- ful fake. McKennell finished off a tan- dem rush with Bassey at 9:56, and the Toronto Terror cruised around the Green and White de- fense six minutes later and caught the far corner of the net with a backhand blast to account for the remainder of a five goal Wolverine second period. Individual scoring honors for the ragged contest went to Matchefts, who garnered five points. Bassey had four, while Burford, McKen- nell, and Celley rounded out Maize and Blue point-getters with three each. Left wing Buck paced MSC's 12th setback with the three-goal hat trick. Teammate Brooks also had three points, on two counters and an assist. Ulrich's Book Store i I By JOHN JENKS Indiana parlayed class with Michigan's inability to sink free throws into a winning combina- tion last night as the Hoosiers handed the Wolverines a 57-42 setback before 5,000 fans in Yost Field House. The smooth-working Hoosiers, paced by the clever ball-handling of Billy Garrett, broke into the lead after eight minutes of play and gradually pulled away to a 24-17 half-time spread. * * * - MIDWAY IN the second stanza, Garrett collected his fourth foul and was removed from the battle scene. Indiana temporarily lost its poise and Michigan made its only serious bid of the contest at that point, cutting the Hoosier lead to five points.' But the Indiana aggregation soon collected itself, piled up a comfortable 15 point margin, and coasted on to its eleventh Conference win. The defeat was Michigan's ninth in 12 Big Ten contests. State Ph. 7177 charity lane bordered on the pa- thetic. Paced by Captain Charlie Murray, who missed nine of 11 gift shots, the quintet was able to compile the unenviable record of sinking only 10 of 33 free throws. INDIANA; on the other hand, dumped in 11 of its 16 one point- ers, but Bill Tosheff, who cur- rently holds the Big Ten free throw record of 25 straight, wasn't awarded any of the 16 shots. Tosheff hit the hoops seven times from out, however, to tie with teammate Bill Garrett and Michigan's Leo VanderKuy for the night's scoring honors with- 14 points. Bob Masters with nine and Sain Miranda with eight points were close behind in the Hoosier, scoring. <" Michigan just about matched its free throw performance during that interval, making seven of 33 shots for a poor .210 average. In- diana sank nine of 37 attempts for a meager .248 figure. IT WAS ANOTHER story in the second half. The Hoosiers popped in 14 of 28 floor shots for a tre- mendous fifty per cent average. The Wolverines improved some- what in. the final period, hitting nine of 33 attempts for a still none-to-respectful 27 per cent. Michigan's cagers play host to the University of Iowa here Monday night in a game they are forced to win if they don't want to finish the season in the Western Conference celler. With only three wins the best Michigan could hope for would be a tie for last place with Ohio State. A win over Iowa, who knocked off the Wolverines '7-48 earlier in the season, would give the quintet its fourth victory and prospects of eighth place berth. 4 I.'
