By BOB ROSENMAN Christmas vacation proved no holiday for Michigan's hockey foes as the Wolverines won 5 games in the space of 16 days toj run their season record to 9 vic- tories without a single defeat. Vic Heyliger's puckmen leveled Western Ontario, 14-1, at the Michigan Coliseum, before de- parting for the East where they rolled over Boston College. 11-2, and Boston University, 3-2, in two of the wildest collegiate hockey games of the year. THE WOLVERINES then re- turned to the Midwest for a two- game series with Minnesota. The Gophers w e r e stubborn, but Michigan swept both games, the first 5-4, in overtime, and the finale by a 6-4 count. The Mustangs from Western Ontario were victims of the Wolverines' biggest scoring on- slaught of the young season. Flashy John McKennell paced the lopsided triumph with 5 goals, but lending valuable help were Gil Burford with 3 goals and 3 assists, and Neil Celley .%, - sa ... Two nights later, the Wolver- ines met Boston University, the team which ousted them from the NCAA playoffs last March. It waas a thrilling battle all the way, with Michigan playing several minutes with only 4 men on the ice to the Terriers' 6. But John Matchefts sank the winning goal at 16:47 of the final period to break a 2-all tie. Al Bassey's goal in a "sudden- death" overtime period enabled Michigan's icers to preserve their perfect record in a 5-4 win over Minnesota, and/the Gophers suc- cumbed again the following eve- ning, 6-4.
