A lot of people are kept from
getting hot and bothered because
of the work of Edwin Tucker.
Tucker, a University plant de-
partment employee, is charged
with the job of keeping the fire
extinguishers in campus buildings
in perfect working order-all
11,000 of them.

EXTINGUISHERS hang on
walls and generally are never
given a second thought by most
people until someone cries "fire"
or Tucker pulls up with his ex-
presswagon and. equipment to
give them their annual checkup.
The expresswagon which
Tucker carries his equipment in
is a miniature chemistry labora-
tory.
Four types of extinguishers are
serviced by Tucker, each of which
operates on a different chemical
principle. The most common ex-
tinguisher utilizes water and
pressure produced whenbaking
powder and sulfuric acid are
mixed.
MOST OF the extinguishers
used in University buildings are
the new cardon dioxide type. Of
the 4,500 of this type on campus
the greatest number are used in
the Chemistry Building, to which
Tucker is diverted from his regu-
lar route almost daily in order to
do emergency refills.
There are also 4,000 carbon te-
trachlorides and a small number
of foamite extinguishers which
require a special chemical mix-
ture.
"Never has one of my' ex-
tinguishers refused to work in
the pinch," Tucker said pride-
fully. However, sometimes peo-
ple get so excited when there
is a fire that they don't know
what to do with an extinguisher.
"One woman once cussed me out
because an extinguisher wouldn't
work when she needed it. But
she was so excited she forgot to
tip the thing so the acid could
react with the baking powder," he
explained.
Tucker, the fire extinguisher
man, also has to play detective
occasionally to catch people who
are fond of squirting water.
"Right rw there's a gang of
boys at niversity High School
who every so oftenstake an ex-
tinguisher off the hook and shoot'
the thing all over the walls. The
janitor and I are working on the
case and we expect to apprehend
the culprits soon."
Soldiers Given
Yule Furlough
CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind.-(IP)
-More than 17,000 soldiers will
leave Camp Atterbury Dec. 22-23
in "operation jinglebells," head-
quarters of the 28th Infantry Di-
vision announced.
The mass movement will be
completed in nine hours. The sol-
diers will be on Christmas leaves
of four, five, nine or ten days. A
dozen special trains, 60 buses, 40,
planes and more than 1,700 private
automobiles will be used.
About half of the men will be
going to Pennsylvania, the divi-
sion's home state.

The lure of California roses and
sunshine is apparently not strong
enough to get most University
students to Pasadena New Year's
day.
With little over 1000 student tic-
kets ordered, it appears that the
bulk of Rose bowl cheering will
be done in the easy chairs by the
family radios or TV sets.

A SPOT survey of sororities, fra-
ternities and dorms has revealed
thatathe main reason for thestu-
dent lack of traveling ambition is
a corresponding shortage of funds.
But other students have made
previous unbreakable holiday
plans, have arranged to see oth-
er bowl games, or just aren't too
interested in taking the journey.
When asked if the Bowl bid had
changed her vacation plans, Carol
Caldwell, '52, came out with an
emphatic, "Not mine." Shortness
of time, lack of money, and the
great distance involved were her
reasons.
