WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1950 THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER ~ 1950 THE MICHIGAN DAILY HAIL TO THE SAILORS V A LI ANT! Michigan Sailing Club Brooks Rain, Snow, or Fog * * * * * American Language Vagaries Listed in New Supplement (Continued from Page 8) By LARRY SPERLING 'An old sailor never dies.' That's the motto of the Michi-I gan Sailing Club. Bu; in view of their recent exploits a better one; would be, 'Through rain, snow or fog our sailors carry on'. TAKE THE recent Northwes- tern Invitational Regatta at Chi- cago. The first day of racing had sub zero weather and strong winds on tap for the sailors, but the races went on. Of course, those who sailed that day had to literally thaw the ice off their bodies after each race. Saturday, despite more adverse' conditions the meet was con- tinued. But it didn't last long. * * * IN THE first race of the day one of the boats capsized and af- ter fishing two blue facsimilies of the boat's skipper and crew from the water it was decided to call off the rest of the meet. That was only the beginning of the fun, however. In the evening there was a party thrown by the Chicago Yacht Club, sponsorsof the regatta. Unfortunately the scene of the party was the boathouse which is attached to the shore{ only by a set of chains. The9 chains were waging what1 proved to be a losing battle with ; the wind and waves of Lake Michigan. Before the party was in full swing the chains lost out and vision broadcasting, while females will hail the arrival of "beef-cake," the masculine gender of cheese- cake. "Cuddling" is no longer done inby boys and girls, the pamphlet said; it's now the close packing .of radio frequencies by the Fed- eral Communications Commis- < sion. The ldgical successor to "Bene- lux," a nick-name for the low- lands, is "Finebel," which some- how adds up to France, Italy, the NetherlandA, Belgium and Luxem- bourg. * * * THE'"KIGMY," a little creature which delights in being kicked around, is a brain-child of car- toonist Al' Capp. "Kigmy" seems destined to Join Capp's now im- mortal "schmoo" as part of our speech. Anew trend in amateur drama .~p~~'V which popped up this summer ' has put "theatre-in-the-round" on American lips. In this "arena * theatre" the actors are sur- rounded by the audience, who some of their' gear before a float- the___audience,__ _who presumably have a tactical ad- vantage in case of a fight. "Butterleggers," a name pro- bably invented by the dairy inter- ests, are folks who sell oleomar- gerine as butter. Sometimes the supplement of temporary terms seems unduly pessimistic about words' durability, For example, Funk & Wagna.l didn't expect "deep freeze" .ana "roller derby" to be around when they put out their next dictionary ONLY ONE GIRL IN THE WORLD Will get this gift--o hand- m'ade dinner ring with three one third carat perfect dia- monds, and numerous small side stones. The watchman and boat house were recovered later by the Coast Guard. * * * everybody found themselves rush- ing for the gangplank. The gang- plank however had capitulated also. A temporary one was put up and everyone got to shore ex- cept the watchman who stayed on board and attempted to res- cue the clothing and valuables left in the boathouse., He succeeded in getting one1 load to the shore when the last chain gave way and boathouse, valuables, and watchman went floating out into the lake. THAT'S JUST one of the num- erous zany things that happen to the sailors every season. In the Michigan State Regatta they were forced to sail in a fog that was so.densethat the skippers couldn't even see the bows of their own ships. * * * A crash ship had to sail ahead of the pack and blow its fog horn to show them the direction of the finish line. Custom decrees that the win- ning team be thrown in the water at the end of each meet. At the conclusion of this par- ticular meet things got a little out of hand and everybody in sight was dunked. The sailors also do quite a bit of traveling. Each year they have a schedule which takes them from California to New England SPECIAL SELLING!
