Also used extensively for paddleball, fourteen such courts are located in the basement of the building along with 10 courts which are ruled for squash., In addition, the basement con- tains the newly equipped var- sity wrestling room. -Daily-A I eed INTRA-MURAL NOTES: There will be a meeting of the athletic managers of pro- fessional fraternities at 7:30 p.m. on September 28th, in the Sports Building. * * * All men interested in officiat- ing in IM touch football are requested to meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the IM Building. -Rod Grambeau By JERRY BALBUS One of the mainstays of the University of Michigan's athletic plant is the Intra-Mural building. The structure is unique in that it is the only one of its kind in the United States. No other col- lege campus can boast of a sin- gle center as home for I-M sports alone. * * * FACILITIES FOR 36 different sports are housed in the build- ing, including a swimming pool, four basketball courts, four in- door tennis courts, fourteen hand- ball courts, and te nsquash courts. All male students at the Uni- versity are eligible to take part in the various activities as long as they have never won a var- sity letter in the sport. Both individual and team com- petition is held. The teams par- ticipating are awarded points for their performances during the year and the one with the I" est total in each division is r ed a trophy. * * * ANOTHER PHASE of the I-M program is the All-Campus tour- naments in which all students, regardless of affiliations, compete for individual gold medals in such sports as tennis, handball, wrestling, and cross country. One of the most coveted awards for any Intra-Mural participant is The Michigan Daily Trophy presented each year to the most well-rounded athlete. The I-M staff picks the winner on the basis of number of sports participated in, advancement in these sports, individual honors, and points accumulated. EVERY Friday evening is set aside for co-recreational night. This is the only time women are allowed to use the building and mixed groups have an opportun- ity to play badminton, basketball, handball, volleyball, and to swim. - 14 an important aspect of your university life . .
