This innovation is an oscillating bed, and its backers hail it as the greatest thing since pine boughs and piles of leaves. * *: * CONSISTING of a mattress with an electric motor secreted in one end, the gadget plugs into any wall outlet. When started, the mo- tor sets every spring into action, giving the sleeper a "circular, cel- lular massage." For those who would be lulled into endless slumber, there is an electric timing device which shuts off the jiggling after an hour. THE IDEA isn't new. Fletcher M. Brown, president of the com- pany producing the shimmying slumber-aid, says condescendingly, "There are other concerns which manufacture vibrating mattresses, but theirs are only straight line vibration." "Our electrically - operated mattress vibrates 3,000 times a minute," Brown explained, "and each movement is circular in pattern, so that the inner springs act like bouncing, spin- ning bubles.' Set to retail at $199, the mat- tress isn't exactly exciting local furniture agents. Some thought it was a joke, others chuckled that it wouldn't have the popular ap- peal of television. * * * BOB WISLER, salesman in a' local furniture store, mused, "It would be okay for some, but what about the sea-sick ones? Besides most people would rather stay awake for that price." I y t, k Y } > r k t }+Fy', Jf + i T'FF sF a +> ut+ } +F gfJ J } }+ ..+ "'tr: Ji :".. The selections must be made in person, Kettler said, and the pho- tographers' representatives il1 be at the Strident Publications build- ing during this week to accomo- date students who have not made their choices yet. Kettler added that selection hours are from. 9:30 a.m. to 5 p. i. One long slumbering stu- dent, Robert McGhee, '50E, who complained of being awakened when interviewed at 3 p.m. yes- terday, yawned, "This thing is liable to make people feel so good they might get out of bed before they have to. That would be truly horrible." "It sounds rather stupid to me," Sally Knapp, '52, comment- ed, "the ones we have now squeak enough." Although the future is dim local- ly, company president Brown has great plans for the future of his machine. He figures on having coin operated mattress in hotels and athletic clubs.
