THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE KIDS KEPT OUT OF MISCHIEF: PlayCircle Organized by Two 'U' Terrace Mothers East Quad Radio Station To Observe Anniversary No longer will University Ter- race mothers be hindered in their house cleaning while their small children play "tag" during the morning. The play circle, a new idea de- signed to keep children in the Uni- versity Terraces out of mischief, was originated recently by two en- terprising mothers, Mrs. Ben Ronis, and Mrs. Rubin Shay. They real- ized that pre-school children are apt to be very much underfoot during cleaning hours in the small Terrace Apartments. * * * "THIS IS the 'first group of its kind organized in Ann Arbor," ac- cording to Mrs. Ronis. "We hope that the other Terraces will be able, to profit from this experiment," she added. A group of eight mothers, which includes two nurses, a doctor and a teacher, take turnsf supervising the children every morning, Monday through Fri- day. The children are placed in two play groups according to age, and 'activities are planned for each of these groups. The University is converting the basement rooms of two Terraces into play rooms, and is also add- ing plumbing facilities for the children. Toys, however, must be supplied by the individual moth- ers. "Since this group started we have noticed an improvement in the mother-child morning rela- tionships," said Mrs. Ronis. "The children do not quarrel as they did before, and the mothers appreciate the extra free time in the morn- ing." 1 1 r "You are tuned for music . WEQN ... serving the East Quad, Ann Arbor." The East Quad's radio station will celebrate its first birthday from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow -in the Green House Lounge. All the cam- pus is invited to the party and Program Director Bill Babbit says he has lined up some good talent. Steve Filipiak and Don Herman, local disk jockeys, will spin re- quests. Home-grown East Quad talent will also supply its own brand of entertainment, according to Babbit. * * * EAST Q U A D D E R S heard WEQN's first station-break at 1200 on the dial a full year ago. Now, presenting music and news 16 hours a day, Sunday through Fri- day, WEQN is a major source of relaxation for about 1400 men of the Quad. But the operations of WEQN today are a far cry from what they were during the hectic months after the birth of the station last November. Then, with begged, borrowed and stolen equipment the founders of the station, Jack Zimmerman, Joe Newman, Curt Verschoor and Bob Turner set up shop in a dingy lit- r;"r:, ' ,;iy' e?? .m i;: ,''";>:ii* ;ti> . >:; .; t1"%r;'-:'. :;s;}c::;~ ::;" tle room deep in the catacombs of the dormitory. Their signals were piped into the Quad's AC powerline and Quadders looking for a bright spot on their dial found that they could hear four hours of uninter- rupted music nightly at 1200. That is-if they lived on the north side of the Quad, laid their radios on the floor with backs up and had their windows open. * * 0 NOT TO BE consigned to a sit- uation which prevented the nor- mal listener from being able to tune in WEQN, the station suc- ceeded in talking the Quad Coun- cil to appropriate $150 and give the station indefinite use of a for- mer mattress storeroom as a stu- dio. After being completely overhaul- ed the studio was lent an air of authenticity by an ON THE AIR light converted from an EXIT sign borrowed from a local theater. The University FM station, WUOM, also came to WEQN's aid by contributing a transmit- ter that enabled the studio to reach the entire Quad. After an 1890 telephone switchboard was replaced with a homemade con- sole valued at $500, WEQN was able to claim the distinction of s s $229s As Sketched UI I "GOOD LITTLE DRESS" Pert bolero over a sophisticated afternoon dress of "Crisp Allure," piped and trimmed -Daily-Burt Sapowitch DISK JOCKEY-Engineer Jack Zimmerman getting ready to spin a platter just introduced -by disk jockey Bill Gerson. George N. Krassner, 21, admitted passing five bad checks in several Ann Arbor stores recently. He was apprehended by police after Wil- liam Kay of 426 Hill St. tipped them off that a bicycle stolen from him on Oct. 4 was parked near Krassner's boarding house at 813 E. Kingsley St. Krassner later ad- mitted to police that he also stole the bicycle. WEQN soon will be able to claim some exclusive features. It will be the only AM outlet in the area for Michigan basketball games, both home and away. Station manager Bob Turner says that plans are being made to pick up and relay the FM broadcasts of the Wolver- ines' home games by WUOM. Games played elsewhere will be broadcast by picking up the broad- cast in the away city by means of a special antenna and relaying it to the Quad's powerline. 217 South Main 9 Nickels Arcade U U W,01 JePael from our exclusive Marion McCoy collection dramatically ornamented at one S...ON .J~l~N~dlLC~I the LOAF and LOUNGE SHOP, on the first floor JUST IN- TIME for Christmas shopping, we are proud to introduce this new Robe and Pajama department, beautifully decorated and planned for your shopping convenience at the College Shop.
