PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1950 LEAD HALF TIME CHEERS: High School Cheerleaders Meet Here More than 2000 high school cheerleaders had their fling in the "big time" yesterday as they at- tended a cheerleading clinic and, performed between halves of the football game here. The cheerleaders, representing 279 high schools from all over Michigan, were given an intensive,. two-hour, course in cheerleading techniques by the University cheerleaders, led by Tom Tillman, '51 Ed., yesterday morning at the I-M building. After hearing a lecture on the finer points of the trade by Uni- versity cheerleader Bill Parrish, Grad., the high school cheerlead- ers took to the gymnasium floor axed held a mass practice session. The enthusiastic students of, cheerleading rocked the girders of' the gym as they went through the "Hello, Indiana," "Fight Fanfare," and "Skyrocket" cheers. Cheerleaders interviewed gurgled their enthusiasm for this first an- nual Cheerleader Day, sponsored by the Bureau of School Services. Lorraine Grgewski of Detroit Commerce High bubbled, "We all think it's simply wonderful." Newt Loken, gymnastics coach and director of the cheerleaders, said, "This is the greatest thing that's ever happened to cheerlead- ing. There are a few kinks to work out, but this is definitely go- ing to be an annual affair." * * * CHEERLEADING SCHOOL - Girls from Adrian and Harbor Springs High Schools get a few personal tips on cheerleading from Tom Tillman, '51Ed, under the watchful eye of Ed Buchanan, '52 Ed, and Dick Hanna, grad, University cheerleaders. What's Up In the Dorms (Any items of interest from any dorm, co-operative or League house should be reported to Alice Men- cher at the Daily, 23241, or at Mar- tha Cook.) "What's in a name?" The West Quad Council has ap- proved a measure that recom- mends changing the name of the West Quad to Bursley Quad in honor of the late Dean Joseph A. Bursley. IT WAS largely through his in- terest and efforts that the dorm system was established at Michi- gan, and the new name would com- memorate his work as the "father" of the system. The recommendation has been turned in to Dean Walter, and must be approved by the Board of Governors and the Board of Regents before the name can be changed. The Law Quad, Cooley and Win-, chell Houses were guests at the 'arty' party given by Jordan, en- titled "Mix-Master-Madcap." The decorations and theme of the mix- er carried out the artist motif. * * * Each resident in Martha Cook is expected to know the name of every other woman in the dorm, and so an annual 'name calling' contest is held. The residents assembled to take this year's quiz under the super- vision of Adele Hager, '51, who in- formed them of the dire conse- quences that would ensue should they fail to name everyone cor- rectly. "It isn't worth the bother to cheat," she said. When the contest was over, one disguested co-ed, whose friends had written illegibly, quoted sadly, "What's in a name?" 'U' Regent to Speak at Hill Roscoe O. Bonisteel, University Regent, will speak on "From One Regent's Point of View" at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Rackham, Lecture Hall. Regent Bonisteel has practiced law since 1912 when he was ad- mitted to the Michigan bar.
