SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1950 PAOEa TWO AT LEAST BILLS DON'T HURT: Drilling Pains Eased at Dental Clinic THE MICHIGAN DAILY I,._________________. __ _ -_______ _______ __________________ A trip to the dentist usually in- '#olves two types of pain-the one experienced in the chair and the other in paying the bill. However at the dental clinic of thi Dentistry School, at least the pain Of paying the bill has been solkewhat eased. MOST STUDENTS don't realize h4 easy it is to secure dental aid at the clinnic," Dr. Harold W. Held, profEssor of dentistry remarked. S in eases' that are not emer- tncles, we usually ask the stu- dents to make an appointment #t'the second floor office of the dental building," he continued. "The preliminary examinations are conducted by senior dental students under the surveillance of facwlty members. The patient suwaAlly has some idea of what is troubling him-for example, cavi- ties, chipped teeth or a loose plate," Dr. Held added. "After the examination, the pa- 'tient is referred to junior or senior dental students who do the actual work," he pointed out. Dr. Held ,emphasized that each step 'in the work done by the student dentists is carefully checked by the facul- ty Iiistructors. * 4. * MANY STUDENTS wonder why w# are not always able to accept then in the clinic," Pr. Held said, "Fr example, only'2,000 of the 5,000 people who came to the clin- Ik for care last year were given treatrent. This happens because znany of the cases are beyond the present ability of the dental stu- dents," he added. 'When cases of this type come to the clinic, we ususally refer them to the Health Service or. *:.rivate practitioner," he said. "The expense of using the clinic ordinarily includes a $.50 registra- tion fee, good for a school year; a $P chrge for two X-rays, which in most cases can be used for more ,thao one year and other costs to c0ver:the expense of materials," he noted. There was a lot of buzzing around connected with the rais- ing of the Homecoming displays this weekend, but even this was equaled by the last minute rush to get ready for the many social events planned as entertainment for out-of-towners on the campus. Alumni, families, Wisconsinites -all have poured into Ann Arbor for the annual get-together and the welcome mat' has been out in a big way. LEADING OFF on the list of those holding after-the-game open houses was Betsy Barbour, who invited their class instructors to drop in, in addition to other guests. The center of the refreshment table featured a miniature model of their house, complete with electric lights, and pipe-stem cleaner figures in familiar "clos- ing hour scenes." Helen Newberry, Jordan and Mosher also had open-houses fol- lowing the game. YESTERDAY was the annual meeting of the Men of Lloyd House Alumni Association, and a very full schedule kept everyone busy. After the game, an open-house and dinner were on the agenda, followed by a business meeting of the Association at 7:30 p.m. Ted Smith and his orchestra provided the music later in the evening as guests were enter- tained at a dance held in the Lloyd House dining room. Earlier in the week Bob Leopold and his band offered a program of jazz renditions as advertisement for last night's dance. . t . THE FIRST CO-OP party of the year was held last night at Muriel Lester House, for the purpose of getting acquainted with the new officers of the Inter-Cooperative Council. Students from all six of the residences in this league were entertained. f MICHIGAN DAILY Phone 23-24-1 HOURS: 1 to 5 P.M.
