THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1950 MORE MAY MOTOR: New Drivin For Studeni Two changes have been made in rules governing the use of cars by students and faculty members, it was announced yesterday by Felix G. Sundquist of the Office of Stu- dent Affairs. There are now three qualifi- cations for exemption from the driving ban where formerly there were only two. * *. * MARRIED STUDENTS a n d teaching fellows are now permit- ted to use cars, in addition to those people who are twenty six years old or over. Previously, only members of Drivers Face U' Parking Lot Shortage "Parking facilities haven't any- where kept pace with the demand for space," University Secretary Herbert G. Watkins said yester- day in announcing a record is- suance of student and faculty driving and parking permits. More than 2,000 faculty parking tags have been issued for 1956, Watkins said. - IN ADDITION, approximately 2,500 driving permits have been granted to University students. Aware of the serious traffic problems in the campus area, Watkins pointed out t h a t "there just isn't room above the ground to put all the cars.'" Two small lots however, are now under construction. One is located next to the Helen Newberry Resi- dence, and the other north of the Student Publications Building. Their combined capacity will be under 100 cars according to Wat- kins' estimate. Loss of the Univer- sity Hall parking lot however, will offset this added space. Sailors on g Regulationsr ts Announced a the faculty with a rating of in. structor or higher and people who met the age requirement were granted driving privileges. Sundquist pointed out that ex- emption is not granted automa- tically but is given only upon personal request. * * * IN EXCEPTIONAL cases, stu- dents who do not fulfill any of the: qualifications for exemption may request driving permission from the Office of Student Affairs. The plan, introduced by CED vice-president Al Silver, '51, con- tains these major points: Contacting the estimated 2700 signers of a petition circulated last year in regard to potential dis- criminatory questions on medical school application blanks and urg- ing them to write to the school requesting the removal of these questions. Contacting the Association of Arts, Sciences and Professions, the American Association of Univer- sity Professors, campus religious groups and similar organizations to express their sentiments on the subject to the medical school.
