ASSEMBLY big day of President Alexander G. Ruth- ven issued a personal invitation to each of the students in the class of 1953-"you are free to come to me if you need my as- sistance at any time. Students always come first," he told them. He urged them not to throw away their obligations to- the Uni- versity, "which has been called one of the greatest of all time." ANDHE cautioned them against academic pitfalls. "Don't waste your time," Dr. Ruthven decried calling a grade of C a "gentle- man's grade," and intimated that such a standard could only lead to scholastic disaster. Dr. Ruthven also had some- thing to say about "armchair presidents," though lie did not call them that. "If you're as smart as I thought I was when I was a freshman, you'll think you know how to run the University better than we do," he said. "However, you'll find that you won't have time." OTHER SPEAKERS were Dean of Students Erich A. Walter, As- sociate Dean of Women Mary C. Bromage, University director of orientation Ivan Parker and Stu- dent Legislature President John Ryder. Dean Walter urged the stu- dents to use their talents to be- come "uncommon men and women" in an age "that has been called the age of the common man. Where the em- phasis falls on those two words depends on you."
