PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY THUIRSDAY, DECEMBER, 15, 1949 _. ., MILLIONAIRES TO TRY: 'U' Doctor Says Claim Of Longer Life Possible CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING By JOHN DAVIES The three aging millionaires 'who called a 78-year-old British ,old age specialist to help them live as long as possible "are quite like- Jy to be helped," according to a prominent specialist in internal pmedicine at the University Hos- ital. The British specialist, Dr. Maur- ice Ernest, arrived in New York City recently, according to the As- oclated Press. "THE BRITISH DOCTOR may find ways to help them regiment their lives so that they will live longer than they otherwise would have," the University Hospital doc- tor said. Commenting on a remark of Dr. Ernest's to the effect that a person "should be able to live as long as he wants, provided there is no radical fault," the Ann Arbor doctor said "There is a popular impression, not sci- Students May Obtain Books Over Holidays Libraries Will Grant Special Permission Students who have been hoping to study during the holiday vaca- tion will be able to use books from the University's libraries. With special permission stu- dents leaving Ann Arbor may borrow books from the stacks for the entire period. Any books al- ready withdrawn, however, muast be renewed before vacation starts, and permission will be granted at that time only if no one is waiting for the book. * * * BOOKS FROM- the study halls may be reserved in advance for the holiday period. No student may reserve more than one such volume. Books not in great demand may be taken out today, others tomorrow. All must be returned before ten o'clock of the first school day after vacation. * * * FOR THOSE students who will be remaining in Ann Arbor, spe- cial provisions have been made. These students may ask to have study hall books put on reserve for them which will be kept at the main library desk. Such books may be borrowed for short periods during the va- cation if there is no demand for them. A one dollar fine may be levied on those students who fail to obey the library regulations and re- move library 14ooks from Ann Ar- bor without permission. entifically proven, that the will to live helps people through ser- ious illness. "And there is also an impres- sion that lack of it hastens deter- ioration. It is often pointed out that active men who retire with- out any other serious interests than their work deteriorate rapid-' ly," the local doctor said: "Furthermore, advances in med- ical and surgical science make possible the successful outcome in older people of serious illnesses or operations which might not even have been attempted a decade ago," he continued. It is probably helpful that Dr. Ernest is 78 years old, since he thus knows how aged people feel, the University Hospital doctor added. Dr. Ernest is the author of a book, "The Longer Life." He told the Associated Press that he had concentrated for the past 45 or 50 years on "what could be done to escape what I consider the great- est humiliation known to mankind -unwanted death and decrepit old age." His system of prolonging life is, in general, treating each physical defect individually as it is discov- ered, he said.
