McKelway, editor of the Washington Star, will speak on "The Press in a Changing World" at 3 p.m. today in Rm. B, Haven Hall. McKelway, who was elected President of the American Society of Newspaper Editors this year, began his newswork in 1916 as a reporter for the Washington Times. AFTER A SHORT stint with the New Britain (Conn.) Herald in 1920, McKelway returned to Wash- ington to take a reporting job on the Star. From this beginning in 1921, McKelway rose steadily through the Washington Star offices of city editor, news editor, man- aging editor and associate editor. In 1946 McKelway took the job which he now holds. Placement CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Groups Seen Cooperating A growing spirit of cooperation exists between all college place- ment agencies in the teaching field, according to Dr. T. Luther Purdom, director of the Bureau of Appointments. This feeling was apparent, he said, at the recent meeting in Chicago of the National Insti- tutional Teacher Placement As- sociation, of which Purdom was president for the last year. * * * "EACH INSTITUTION natur- ally feels obligated to its own stu- dents first," he explained, "but after that, if we can place those from other schools, we do so." "For instance," he. con- tinued, "the University of Cali- fornia placement bureau places 15 Michigan graduates every year. EARLY CHRISTMAS-Jimmy Pochon, five years old, clasps the paw of "Fluffy," his premature Christmas gift, as his parents pre- pare for an early visit from Santa Claus, at Tarentum, Pa. Jimmy has cancer and doctors say he will probably not live another two weeks. Jimmy explains it this way: "I've been a good boy."
