PAGE TWO TiE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1949 I PORTAGE LAKE LOOKOUT: New 'U' Observatory Nearly Comnplete By LEONARD GREENBAUM The University's new observa- tory located at Portage Lake took another step towards completion with the recent installation of its dome. The dome, 28 feet in diameter and 41 feet above the ground, was added to the modern structure a year after the scheduled date. THE OBSERVATORY was be- gun in April, 1948, as a result of a $100,000 grant from the MacGreg- or Fund of Detroit and a $160,000 grant from the University. The 24 inch field telescope wVlhich will allow coverage of wide areas of the sky is due to arrive early this week. Named after the late Dr. Curtis, chairman of the Department of Astronomy, from 1930 to 1942, the telescope will be ready for use shortly after the first of the year. THE DEPARTMENT of Astron- omy, under the leadership of Prof. Leo Goldberg, has been gradually rounding out its facilities in order ' to offer a broad program of grad- uate training for future astron- omers. The completion of the Portage Lake observatory marks the ful- fillment of the department's plans. The new observatory brings the number of those owned and operated by the University to four. It will be used for research on distant stars and their galaxies as well as on many small planets and comets. * * * OTHER LOCAL sites are the McMath-Hulbert Observatory near Pontiac where solar research is carried on and the observatory on Use of New 'Cold Cure' UnderFire Dr. Warren Forsythe, director of Health Service, yesterday de- nounced use of anti-histametics as a cold cure without a doctor's prescription. He warned students against us- ing drugs for self-treatment of colds "until time-consuming, well-controlled studies and more clinical experience provide con- clusive evidence favoring their use.'" * * * NEO-HETRAMINE, most suc- cessful of the anti-histametics in treatment of colds, was recently approved by the Pure Food and Drug Administration for sale as an "over the counter" product. Dr. Forsythe called this gov- ernmental action "an interesting new development in the approval of self-medication by non-medi- cal people." This federal approval has re- sulted in nation-wide advertis- ing campaigns by companies which manufacture the anti- histamines for commercial use. According to local pharmacists, demand for the drugs in Ann Arbor far exceeds the supply available to wholesalers. Dr. Forsythe cited several com- plications which may result from indiscriminate use of anti-hista- metics. Probably the most important of these is the possibility of deaden- ing the individual's mental facul- ties, he said. This may result in dangerous automible accidents or, in the case of students, inabili- ty to cope with school examina- tions. 4 FORSALE IMPORTED Chinese silk hand woven pictures at $3.00.
