The 'Enslan staff has a collection of more than 100 exchange books of colleges from Maine to California. But this year's Michigan product will beat them all, they promise. Staff orks Long Hours On Yearbook When the 1950 'Ensian is dis- tributed late this spring, the year-1 book will represent 14 months of hard work by 70 staffers. And as Managing Editor Jean- nie Johnson will testify, there k some work to be done almost every day of that period. BEGINNING in May when the Board in Control of Student Pub- lications appoints 'Ensian editors until the end of the following June when all the books have been distributed, the 'Ensian staff is hard at work planning page make- up, snapping pictures, and meeting deadlines. During the summer Miss Johnson, along with Art Editor Barb Henry and Business Man- ager Dave Stuart, visited the Chicago concern which prints the 'Ensian cover, and the en- graving plant in Indianapolis. The 'Ensian trio, nalonsg with th engravers, began drawing plans for the layout of pages, using a library of samples as a spring- hoard for their own ideas. BY TIHE TIME school begins in September, the layout of all six sections of the 'Ensian has airealy been determined. The six sections. each supervised by a Junior Editor are : schools and colleges, house groups, organizations, special fea- tures, sports, and senior pictures. Photographers then begin snapping the 20,000 pictures during orientation week, and continue until the end of Mai )' when the last portion of the book is sent to press. All during the year, the 'Ensian, working from the master dummy drawn up during the summer, per- fect layout and pictures, arrange copy, confer with the printer, and check proofs. The book is sent to the printers in sections, consisting of 16 pages each and called a "signature." A6 soon as the last piece of copy has been sent to the printers, the staff gets ready for distribution, which Miss Johnson expects wal start about May 25 this yea. Then, "when the last book has been cistributed, and the last desk cleaned out, we hold a 'Thank G.jd It's Over' party," Miss Johnxon said. Personal greeting 00 d 16 IMPORTED... Working with the "master dummy" for the book, their job requires technical perfection to the six- teenth of an inch. Paste, rulers, compasses and slide-rules assist them in achieving accurate proportions.
