Swimming The wraps will come off and the spotlight will go on the 1950 edi- tion of the Michigan swimming team on December 14 when they compete in the eighteenth annual Michigan AAU championships. The traditional swim 'gala' fea- turing competitors from all parts of the state will be held in Ann Ar- bor at the Michigan pool. * * .* COACH MATT MANN will have his problems in finding replace- ments for the six lettermen lost from last year's team. Freestylers Dick Weinberg, Bill Kogen, Jay Sanford and John McCarthy will not return. In addition the Wol- verines lost breaststroker Bob Sohl and diver Ralph Trimborn. But this year's team will be bolstered by twelve returning lettermen. Returning are free- stylers captain Matt Mann III, Dave Neisch, Tom Coates, Gus Staeger, Dave Tittle, " Charlie Moss and Bob Byberg. In the backstroke Bernie Kahn, Jack Arbuckle, and Tom Smith will be back as will be breaststrok- er Bill Upthegrove and diver George Eyster. * * ,* Wrestling "The magician of the mats" is at it again-Cliff Keen, Michigan wrestling coach and leading devel- oper of new grappling talent is now hard at work with his 54 man squad preparing for the 1950 sea- son. He reports progress in the work of some of his newcomers who combined with his pair of return- ing lettermen and others from last year should result in a respectable Michigan Mat Crew. * * * AT 121 POUNDS, two men are showing progress. They are Brad- ford Stone and Joe Kosic, both Juniors who were out for wrestling for the first time last year. In the 128 pound entry, Larry Nelson and George Pelyak show potential prowess. Short of men in the 136 pound class, Keen has only one man, Bob Sligh, to fall back on. * * * CAPTAIN JIM SMITH appears to have the upper hand in the 145 pound division although Dave Entries for the all campus handball tournament which starts December 1 are still be- ing accepted. All those who are interested are requested to fill out an entry blank at the I-M offices as soon as passible. Space, Ann Arbor Sophomore who wrestled for the first time last year, is giving the Wolverine vet- eran an interesting battle for his job. I f f the all important Big Ten total of- fense title. ORTMANN passed the ball for 500 yards, and gained 268 yards through rushing for an amazing total of 768 yards. He also led the conference in returning kickoffs with a 37.2 yards per try average. The other Wolverine to gain honors was Chuck Lentz, who intercepted 7 passes for 79 yards to set an all time Big Ten rec- 'ord. He was also number one in the conference this season in re- turning punts. Taking the boot- ed pigskin 15 times, Lentz re- turned it a total of 149 yards. Johnny Karras, sophomore at Illinois, became the conference's leading ground gainer by carrying the ball a total of 732 yards, eras- ing the old record of 669 yards es- tablished by Les Horvath of OSU in 1944. Karras slashed away 109 times for an average of 6.7 yards per try, according to the final league fig- ures released yesterday. * * * BOBBY ROBERTSON, sopho- more at Indiana, was the top punter in the conference as far as statistics go. His educated toe av- eraged 40.8 yards on 32 punts, and accounted for a new record when he returned 12 kickoffs. Senior Quarterback Don Bur- son of the Wildcats was the Big Ten's leading passer with 44 completions in 95 flips for 664 yards and five touchdowns.
