PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1949 GEM OF AMERICANA: Gettysburg Exhibit Will Commemorate Address ,DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN ' l Four score and six years ago, on Nov. 19, at the dedication of a cemetery, Abraham Lincoln brought forth a two minute speech which has since become the best- known gem of Americana. To commemorate the famous address, the speech department has planned a "Gettysburg exhib- it" which will be held tomorrow through Saturday in the speech library and the cases beside the department office. THE anniversary of the address Mrs.. Eitzen Sings 'Wintereise' Today Mrs. Leslie Mong Eitzen, of the music school, wil present Schu- bert's song cycle, "Die Wintereise" ("The Winter's Journey"), in a recital without.intermision at 4:30 p.m. today at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. Mrs. Eitzen, soprano, received her musical training at Cu1rtis In- stitute and the Kansas City Con- servatory of Music. She is now a teaching fellow in voice at the University and has appeared as soloist in programs over several eastern radio stations. has taken additional significance since it was set aside by an act of Congress three years ago as "Dedication Day." In its resolution, Congress suggested "that the address be read on that day in public as- semblages throutghoaut the United States and its posses- sions, on our ships at sea and wherever the American flag flies." This is the first speech to be so recognized, said Prof. G. E. Dens- more, chairman of the speech de- partment. The address will be read in all speech classes on that day, he added. The exhibit will feature photo- static facsimiles of the five copies of the Gettysburg address. A PRINT of the only existing photograph of the crowd which heard the address will also be dis- played. No picture was taken of Lincoln himself, as by the time the photographer could adjust his cumbersome apparatus, Lincoln had concluded his talk. Several artists have drawn their conceptions of Lincoln delivering his famous speech, and copies of these will be included in the ex- hibit.
