I PAGE TWOY THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1949 $10,000 IN AWARDS: Engineers Will Receive Scholarship Bequests A More than $10,000 in scholar- ships are being offered to "U" en- gineers this year. Indications are that competition for the awards will be higher this year than at any time since pre- war days, as there are less veterans on campus and hence a larger number of students who have a 'need for funds, according to Prof. Henry Miller of the Engineering Scholarship Committee. ** * APPLICANTS are judged on a basis of grades, financial need and residence, with a minimum grade of 2.5 and completion of at least 30 hours of work needed, Prof. Miller said. "The Scholarship Committee particularly wants to determine how well a man performs work under the stress of earning a TYPEWRITERS Office and Portable Models of all makes Sold, Bought, Repaired, Rented CHRISTMAS CARDS MORRILUS 314 South State St. G. Ten thousand dollars, for schol- arship use has recently been given to the University by the Curtis Wright company. Six $500 awards will be given to undergraduates interested in aeronautical re- search and production engineer- ing. * * * SEVEN fellowships of $1000 each are available for students in- terested in theoretical research and industrial production pro- jects. The Donovan scholarships of- fer $200' to eligible juniors and seniors and $100 awards to en- gineers who have completed 30 through 110 hours of work at the University. Six engineers in the mechanical, electrical and civil fields are se- lected by the Scholarship Com- mittee as candidates for the three Morse scholarships. A SPECIAL stipulation of the Morse awards gives an additional $500 if the student continues a high rate of achievement in his senior year, Prof. Miller explained. Other scholarships open to engineers are the Hunt awards which offer four $200 stipends; the Gemmel scholarships which are open to sophomores and of- fer $100 to ,engineers; and the Regents scholarships which are made available to students in need of emergency funds, he said. Braun, aca- demic counselor and member of the German department. Dr. Braun, speaking at the first in a series of West Quadrangle lecture forums, emphasized to a large audience, of freshmen that the grades should be considered as progress reports, and nothing conclusive. THE FIRST five weeks are rough for most freshmen because they have neither made proper so- cial and personal adjustments, nor acquired good study habits, he said. "Study requires will power and no daydreaming," Dr. Braun added. "Often English serves as an in- dicator of the freshman's diffi- culties," Dr. Braun said. He pointed out that students who cannot express themselves con- vincingly in English are often weak in other courses requiring concise presentation of ideas. DR. BRAUN urged freshmen to drop no course until it becomes absolutely necessary. "The academic counselors at all times stand ready and will- ing to help freshmen analyze their problems and overcome them," he said. A staff of 14 counselors, under the direction of Prof. Arthur Van Duren, of the German department, works six hours a week and is at the disposal of the student, Dr. Braun said.
