But it is the home team, the Michigan Wolverines, that have the reputation for out-of-State talent. The Maize and Blue roster is dotted with stars from Wis- consin, Illinois, Ohio and points east. * * * - YET, it will be the Boilermaker's from Lafayette, Ind., who will not face one Hoosier lad in a Michigan uniform tomorrow. Such past greats as All-American Tom Har- mon and Tom Kuzma hail from Indiana, but not one of the 1949 Wolverines are Hoosiers. Worse yet, the Purdue-via- Michigan lads are main cogs of a Boilermaker machine that upset the now-deflated Minne- sota Gophers last week. Leading the resurgent Boiler- makers is Angelo Carnaghi, a De- troit St. Anthony's product. This 186-pound senior already has three Purdue letters under his belt, grabbing his first as a fresh- man halfback in 1944. BIGGEST THREAT to the Wol- verines top defensive rating is Hurricane Harry Szulborski, a pile-driving senior halfback from Detroit Pershing High School. Harry topped the Big Ten in yard- age gained from scrimmage the past two years, pushing over five TD's last season. Szulborski was hampered by injury in Purdue's first six games, but will be ready for the Wolverines. Big (6 foot 4 inch, 220-pound) Bob Grant will leer at Wolverine linemen from his right tackle position. At Lansing Sexton High School, he won All-State honors in both football and basketball. Grant is a junior. Leo (Shug) Sugar, three-sport athlete from Flint Northern High School, has won the Boilermaker defensive left end post, although only a sophomore. He was an All- Stater on the gridiron and co- captained the cage squad in his prep days. TAKE four Michigan boys with an incentive, add a rugged line that outplayed a ponderous Min- nesota forward wall last week, toss in a quartet of hard-running backs led by passer-quarterback Ken Gorgal, spice the concoction with a sky-high winning spirit, mix well, and presto-Wolverine worries Saturday. -Gunhard Oravas NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF-This is just about how Purdue stacked up against Minnesota last week, before they toppled the once-mighty Gophers. Fortunately the Wolverines are now aware of the new-found Boilermaker power and can pre- pare against the "Jack-the-Giant-Killer" tactics of Purdue. Gophers Stress Contact Work In Pre-Iowa Practice Drills MINNEAPOLIS - (1P) - Uni- versity of Minnesota gridders opened their last long practice in preparation for the Iowa game with a lengthy live tackling drill yesterday. Emphasis was laid on downfield assignments in the blocking drill which was followed by a brushup on-defense against Iowa plays, es- pecially passes. Considerable time was devot- ed, too, to protecting passers and kickers. " The squad is in good shape for tomorrow's game except for co- captain Clayton Tonnemaker, who r is suffering from a cold, and Keith Stolen, line backer who has an in- jured back. * * * OSU Wary of Pitt COLUMBUS, 0. - Ohio State's football squad braved a chill wind on .the practice field for 90 min- utes yesterday preparing for to- morrow's tussle with the Pitt Pan- ther. Cockiness was notable for its absence among the 36-man Buck- eye traveling squad. The word ap- parently had gotten around that the Panthers were pointing toward a conquest over their former coach, Wes Fesler, and vengeance for the 41-0 lacing they took at the hands of the Bucks last year. The Ohio State squad will leave for Pittsburgh this morning. Fes- ler said his starting lineup tomor- row probably will be the same which started against Northwest-, ern last week. SPOUTS HUGH QUINN, Night Editor EAST LANSING -(.')- Among other things at stake in tomorrow's football festival between Michigan State and Notre Dame is Biggie Munn's reputation as a line-build- er.. The Spartan coach, a former linesman, has been noted as a -great cementer of forward walls. His defense will be given its su- preme test by Notre Dame. WITH THIS in mind, Munn has been spending a lot of his time on the practice field working with line coach Hugh (Duffy) Daugh- erty on the linesmen. "Duffy's Toughies" have been schooled in a specialized form of defense against the Notre Dame attack. Munn always speaks of his lightweight line. But actually, Notre Dame hasn't got much of on edge on him if the program weights are even fairly accur- ate. The two Irish tackles are listed at 204 and 202, the guards at 195 and 185, and the center at 192. MUNN CAME up with a surprise in the opening Michigan game by using what amounted to an eight- man line at times on defense. The two line backers up were playing just a few paces behind the line ready to jump in or cut out de- pending on which way the play went. You can be sure that Munn and Daugherty are planning plenty of tricks in an effort to halt the Irish attack. "We'll be ready by today," Munn said. "We're hustling." 1I i' 11 I I' 11 ai 1 I State Street fastrss feature 11 at Liberty , X Y ' Van lienlShifts Had enough of Button down, button down If you're an Oxford man--and what college man isn't when it comes to shirts-you'll find Van Heusen is your smartest course in button downs.
