PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1949 COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Pressure Against Bias Mounting on Campuses E. .r^' r, ; i x }.r i ...: :, :sue ° ° By DAVE THOMAS Anti-discrimination pressure has already begun to pile up on college campuses in preparation for the National Interfraternity Conference meeting, Nov. 24, in Washington, D.C. A recommendation that nation- al fraternities eliminate constitu- tional clauses that discriminate against students on the basis of face, color or creed has been passed by the Northeastern Re- gional Interfraternity Conference. * * * MEETING at the University of Massachusetts, fraternity dele- gates from nine of the 14 colleges attending signed the resolution last week. The conference asked that the National Conference take action on their proposal at the forthcom- ing meeting in Washington. Represented at the meeting were: Syracuse, Middlebury, Clarkson, Union, Rensselaer, Polytechnic, Brown, Vermont, Maine, Worchester Polytechnic, Massachusetts, Cornell, Am - herst, St. Lawrence and MIT. Maine, MIT, St. Lawrence, Syracuse and Union did not sign the resolution as their local IFC's had not yet taken a definite stand on this issue. * * * AT THE NSA Rocky Mountain regional conference held at the Today's Pro grams FORUM-12:30 p.m. People's Platform: "What should be done about contnunists now?" University of Colorado at Boulder recommendations were made to all regional schools urging that all questions concerning race, religion or nationality be eliminated from dormitory applications. In Detroit, Wayne University students have begun to agitate through their student council for the refusal of university re- cognition to new groups which have discriminatory clauses in their constitutions. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Wisconsin will henceforth have to show "sin- cerity" in removing restrictive clauses from their constitutions, according to a motion passed by the student board. * * * REMINISCENT of the barber l shop dispute which oocurred in Ann Arbor two springs ago is the news that a non-racial barber- shop has been opened at Penn. State by the local Council on Ra- cial Equality. Funds for the establishment of such a shop were gathered two years ago during a three- week boycott of local barbers by the group. More than $1,800 was raised at that time through the sale of tickets which could be redeemed later in the form of haircuts. Even as far south as North Carolina, vigorous action is being pushed in the discrimination front. Charging that their failure to gain admittance to the Univer- sity of North Carolina's law school is a violation of their Constitu- tional rights, two Negro students have entered a suit against the University in the federal courts.
