PAGE TWO THE- MICHI+GAN DAILY _ _ _ _ _ _ - _ -I_ MUSIC (?) LOV E RS MEET: Hot Record Society Holds Jazz Session By EVA SIMON Bebop, Dixieland and swing lov- ers set the League Ballroom rever- berating last night with an in- formal jazz session by three stu- dent ensembles. The jazz session, the first of a monthly series to be sponsored by the Hot Record Society, was at- tended by close to 200 foot-tap- ping, hand-clapping jive enthus- iasts. THREE TYPES of jazz were represented by the Lord Carlton sextet for swing, the Dixieland Group and a bebop group under Hugo Jackson. Monthly Jam sessions are only one of the many activities spon- sored by the Hot Record Society. Every Sunday night the society has record concerts at which mem- bers discuss various phases of the jazz world, with illustrations from their own collections. Most mem- bers spelialize in one or two bands, their tastes ranging from Duke Ellington to "Fats" Waller and Stan Kenton. * * . * RECORD TRADING is a popu- lar pastime among members. Many record stores sell the club discs at reduced rates. Some members have acquired jazz records from" France, Sweden, England and Den- mark. Though most members confine their activities to discussing and listening to jazz, a few belong to the Dixieland Group, a small group of students who get to- gether and play "just for the fun of it." Continuous from 1 :30 P.M. EI!I~a -Daily-Wally Barth IN THE GROOVE-Ray Richardson, second from left, president of the Hot Record Society, looks on as the Lord Carlton Sextet improvises on a swing number. The jam session Sunday night was attended by close to 200 enthusiastic jazz lovers. DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN Prof. Wood Flits Welfare Proposals Current proposals aimed at tightening the Michigan welfare code have been called medieval by Prof. Arthur E. Wood of the sociol- ogy department. The proposals were male by a State Legislature committee which has been reviewing the welfare set-up. Local county welfare of- ficials had endorsed the recom- mendations last week. BUT PROF. WOOD asserted that the committee's proposals were reminiscent of the Poor Laws of the Middle Ages which regarded the poor as criminals. The proposals were made by a call for: 1. Enactment of a law making it criminal offense for social workers to grant fradulent re- lief. 2. A requirement that women with husbands in' other states get a divorce before applying for welfare payments in Michigan. 3. A stipulation that relief ap- plicants in desertion cases swear out warrants against -their spous- es before they can obtain relief. Prof. Wood condemned the re- commenlations dealing with mari- tal relations, pointing out that the swearing out of a warrant would probably end any chance of recon- ciliation. "ALSO IT REQUiRES a good deal of time to obtain a divorce in most states," he added. "Under the new proposals the woman ap- parently is to starve to death while waiting for her divorce." The welfare department ani not the welfare laws themselves is responsible for any dishonesty that has occurred in welfare casts, he declared. "The only way to administer the relief code is to employ civil ser- vice employees who are properly trained in social work." RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR HEINE'S BLEND THE SMOKING TOBACCO WITH AN M..
