Coming to campus last year as a freshman with the intention of organizing a band, Smith is said to have skimmed the cream of the crop from the Michigan marching band to form his 14-piece combo. * * * WHEN HE left the band he had played in during high school, friends laughed at his idea of starting a band on campus. They told him that Ann Arbor was too small for another big band - Tinker was enough. But despite the lack of encouragement Smith did succeed in his undertaking. Sophomores To Collect Dues 0 The finance committee of Soph Cabaret will begin the collection of sophomore dues tomorrow. Used to help finance the presen- tation of the Cab, the dues have been set at a dollar for each girl. They will be collected by the com- mittee members at each women's residence on campus. Girls who are not contacted may pay their dues in the League Un- dergraduate Office. All proceeds from the Cabaret will be donated to the "U" Fresh Air Camp. Girls ,interested in working on any of the various committees of the Cab may still sign up in the League Undergraduate Office. Committees having open positions include costumes, tickets, pro- grams, publicity, decorations, re- freshments, ushering, hostesses, special booths and stage manage- ment. There will be a rehearsal of all Fortnite skits at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Lydia Men- delssohn Theatre. A meeting of the Fortnite Central Committee is sche- duled for 4 p.m. tomorrow in the League. Last year Smith's band play- ed for Soph Cabaret, Frosh Weekend, Mortarboard's Pay- Off Dance, several Lawyer's Club dances, and a number of other affairs. Smith, who is in the architecture school, is the featured vocalist. Willie Maiden, arranger with the largest army service orchestra in Germany during the war, handles the special arrangements. One of the top specialty numbers featur- ed by the band is the Warsaw Concerto. * * * THE FORMAL, which is the first girl-bid dance of the semes- ter, is open to all women on cam- pus. "This is an excellent oppor- tunity for coeds to repay their dates for the Homecoming Dance or for the new women on cam- pus to repay the men they've met," said Mary Ann Harris, publicity chairman of the dance. The American apple will provide the theme, with Johnny Appleseed and Apple Mary appropriately making appearances. Decorations will add to the apple atmosphere, as will the souvenir programs.
