SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1949 T R -G-A," 9 6 X -I f Y Wolverines Favored To Beat 'Cats T, ITLZ~M Both Teams In Top Shape For Encounter (Continued from Page 1) nesota clash and the Wildcats of- fensive suffered from his absence. The big news for Michigan followers was the announcement that Chuck Ortmann would be playing for the Wolverines. The ace Wolverine passer suffered head and leg injuries on the see- ond play of last week's Army game and has participated in the lighter scrimmages at Ferry Field this week. Team trainer, Jim Bunt announced that he had recovered and would be in the Michigan starting line up. Coach Oosterbaan announced that he would stick with John Ghinda at quarterback. JOE KOCESKI and Ortmann will join "Killer" Kempthorn in the Maise and Blue backfield with Wally Teninga resuming his role as trouble shooter and punter for Michigan. Michigan has' a large edge in its football relations with North- western having won 15 out of 23 games and tying two others. Northwestern has won six. The last Wildcat victory came in 1937 on a 7-0 count. The Wolverines have been rated a two touchdown favorite by wire association experts and will have to win by at least that margin to gain back some of the national prestige lost to Army last week. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Georgia '7, LSU 0. 4 Purdue 14, Miami (Fla.) 0. Tulsa 21, Villanova 19. Georgetown 21, NYU 6. Continuous from 1 P.M. T --Last Times Today - Tulane Meets Notre Dame In Week's Top Grid Clash NEW YORK-(/P)-Tulane and4 Notre Dame will smack each other around in the top game on a crowded college football program today and the winner can start trying on the National crown for size. Although several other unbeaten powers will be involved in games with important bearing on major conference races, the intersectional struggle at South Bend, Ind., shapes up as one of the best of the year. NOTRE DAME, undefeated al- though twice tied in 31 games dat- ing back to the 1946 opener, cur- rently is accepted as the nation's No. 1 outfit and will enter this contest as a two-touchdown fa- vorite. Tulane, on the other hand, has won 12 in a row since losing its first game of 1948, three of them this season. Now ranked fourth in the nation, the Green Wave is bent on avenging the 59-6 licking it absorbed from the Irish in their last meeting two years ago. Whatever happens today, the winner at South Bend will have the gridiron world by the tail with a downhill pull. The Irish, by winning, not only would preserve their long defeatless streak but surely would justify their lofty ranking. Among the other top-ranking teams which will be attempting to retain or improve their posi- tions today, those with the tough- est row to hoe appear to be Min- nesota, California and Southern Methodist. California-So. Cal. . . California, the ninth place team, tangles with Southern California in a Berkeley game that will estab- lish the winner as a co-favorite with UCLA in the Pacific Coast Conference. SNIU-Rice ... Southern Methodist, ranked tenth, will be at home for a night game with Rice that opens the Southwest Conference slate for both teams. Oklahoma-Kansas ... Oklahoma, the country's No. 3 team, entertains Kansas and Kan- sas State goes to Iowa State in the Big Seven. Other midwestern highlights include Missouri at Illinois, Navy at Wisconsin, William and Mary at Michigan State, De- troit at Marquette, Drake at Oklahoma A. and M. and Mis- (sissiP piMate at Cincinnati. Army-Harvard . . Army, running a close second to Notre Dame after its upset of Michigan, will be at winless Har- vard. That game shares top bill- ing in the east with such Ivy League struggles as Cornell at Yale, Columbia at Pennsylvania and Brown at Princeton. Tarheels-Wake Forest . . Unbeaten North Carolina, ranked sixth, will be invaded by Wake Forest, one of the season's disappointments. Also in the Southern Conference, North Car- olina State will be at Duke, Vir- ginia Military at Richmond, Wash- ington and Lee at Virginia and George Washington at Virginia Tech. Tennessee-Alabama . . In the Southeastern Conference it will be Tennessee at Alabama, CHICAGO - ()-Kid Gavi- lan, Cuba's aspirant to the World's welterweight cham- pionship, last night adminis- tered a decisive defeat to Beau Jack, former lightweight title- holder, in a blistering ten round battle in the Chicago stadium. Auburn at Georgia Tech and Van- derbilt at Florida. The Citadel has a non-conference date at power- ful Kentucky. Texas-Arkansas ... Texas invades Arkansas and Texas A.&M. visits Texas Chris- tian in additional Southwest Con- ference tussles, while Baylor goes to Texas Tech. I-M Football Player_ Injured Burton Kampner, '53 Architec- ture, became the first reported cas- ualty of the Intramural touch football season when he sustained a slight skull fracture Wednesday afternoon at Ferry Field. Kampner, quarterback of the Sigma Alpha Mu football entry, received the injury when he was hit in the head while blocking. He was taken to the Health Service, and it is expected that he will be released early next week. MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Phone 23-24-1 HOURS: 1 to 5 P.M. Completely stealing the spotlight from two other league games-de- fending champion Michigan hat Northwestern and Indiana at Iowa -the Gopher-Buckeye battle car- ries a double incentive. THE WINNER NOT only will be pegged an almost certain candi- date for a Rose Bowl bid, but also unquestionably will stand as the team to whip fo" the Conference title. The Gophers won their only previous conference start by belting Northwestern 214 last Saturday. That followed Min- OPEN DAILY AT 1:15 P.M. NOW PLAYING! at 3:15 - 6:25 & 9:35 - Starts Sunday - 0g A R A ed f SHE'S A COACH WHO NEVER WINS A GAME "" BUT THE MAID nesota's non-loop triumphs over Washington and Nebraska. Ohio shaded Missouri, trounced Indi- ana in a Conference fray, and last Saturday deadlocked South- ern California, 13-13. Three other Big Ten teams have outside engagements. Purdue met Miami of Florida last night, while today Wisconsin is host to Re- surging Navy and Illinois enter- tains dangerous Missouri. * * * MICHIGAN'S appearance at Northwestern before a capacity 55,000 marks the Conference debut by the Wolverines, chastened by a 21-7 loss to Army last Saturday. The Cadet triumph snapped Mich- igan's winning streak at 25. Michigan, however, still ranks a strong contender for the league title, the Wolverines no longer are under pressure of maintaining an unbeaten rec- ord. Now Minnesota or Ohio State will be under the gun in later meetings with Michigan which faces the Gophers at Ann Arbor next week and Ohio, also at home, on Nov. 19. Iowa with a 1-1 league record figures to win by at least two touchdowns from Indiana, smoth- ered by Ohio in its only Confer- ence start. MSC Host At Regtatta The Michigan State Invitational regatta will be held today and to- morrow at Whitmore Lake. An insufficient number of boats to accommodate the six schools entered has forced the Spartans to hold the annual regatta at Whit- more Lake where they can use the Michigan Sailing Clubs racing craft. Of the six schools participating Michigan, last year's Mid-west champions rate as pre race favor- ites. The other schools competing are MSC, Illinois Institute of Technology, Wayne, Ohio State, and Northwestern. All races will be sailed in both 'A' and 'B' divisions.
