THE MICHIGAN DAILY I TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1949 NEW INDOOR THRILL: Tap-Room TV Proving Popular Sport at Union ,h By PAUL BRENTLINGER he Tap-room television at the Un- 22 ion is the latest campus entertain- 1- ment sensation. 1- Last week's world series tele- casts provided the biggest draw- :f ing card since the set was in- i- stalled in the Union cafeteria at 1- the end of the summer term, ac- i- cording to Walter Orth, assistant cafeteria manager. * * * k "FROM 800 TO 1,000 students 1e were in to see the series games d each afternoon," Orth estimated. l- Of course all these people d were not in the tap room at once. They came and went as i- their class schedule permitted, >f but the 300 to 350 chairs in the ic vicinity of the TV set were al- ie ways filled, Orth said. Qr Sports in general seem to be d the most popular form of video y entertainment among Union tap- ie room patrons. L.e * *, * LARGE CROWDS gather each ENDING WEDNESDAY MATINEE 50c EVE. 74c STAGE SHOWS AT 3:00 - 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. AT IT'S OLD TIME BEST NF le Ist h I tion's ! These fight fans do not hesitate to express their feelings vocally, either. Each fall or knockdown is greeted with vigorous cheers or jeers, accord- ing to the popularity of the vic- tim. Michigan football games drew sizeable crowds to the tap-room, even on home game days. It seems that the Ann Arbor townspeople have discovered the TV set also. A special favorite among some of the video fans is the young lady who conducts a physical culture class at 4 p.m. on most weekdays. THE YOUNG LADY, described by one patron as being "well built," personally demonstrates various exercises for the fair sex. "The boys get a big kick out of this gal," assistant house manager Lindley Dean declared. Top flight vaudeville shows such as those put on by Arthur Godfrey and Milton Berle rank high on the preference list of the fans, also. SLIGHTLY LESS popular are the quiz shows and the amateur hours, which give Joe Doakes from Podunk a chance to demonstrate his skill on his specially-built har- monica. With, all the popularity of the television set, Union officials ex- pect no great change in the amount of business done by the tap room. Although more patrons visit the tap room now, they spend more time there. Thus, the increased business which they bring is off- set by the fact that the turnover of patrons is very slow. Student Wage Level Stable, SurveyFinds (Continued from Page 1) inately men, are earning their board by waiting tables and work- ing as kitchen help in campus fraternities, sororities and League Houses. While a few of these groups pays a regular hourly wage, most of them give students board for a little more than an hour's work for each meal. Students working in Univer- sity residence halls are paid slightly below the proposed min- imum wage law. Depending on the type of job, the hourly rates are 65c and 70c. It was pointed out, however, that the conven- ience of working in their own dormitories partially offsets the students' lower wages. The Union wage scale compares favorably with that of local busi- ness establishments, the average being about 80c an hour. The scale ranges from 75c an hour for busboys to $1.15 an hour for senior desk clerks. Detroit Rally Calm During Robeson Talk (Continued from Page 1) (to the tune of "Just like a tree that's standing by the water"). * * * HE DID not make a long speech, but alternated between singing and reading prepared statements. He told of his ex-slave father teaching him his responsibility toward the Negro people. "Some say that Negroes are all right if they keep their place. I have but one place: Full Amer- ican citizenship. Give us our full human dignity," Robeson said. "All right, tell 'em! That's it." a man across the aisle kept shouting at the high points of Robeson'si address. ROBESON sang "Let My People Go" and another spiritual, "Scan- dalize My Name" and "Joe Hill" (which he dedicated to "the 12 brave leaders of the American' working people") and a Yiddish song about the Warsaw Ghetto. The concluding selection was, naturally enough, 'Ole Man River," in the politically con- scious version ( show a little grit ... ") of which Oscar Ham- merstein claims to disapprove. During the song, there was an exodus of people trying to leave, but the woman behind me kept yelling: "Sit down and hear that brave man singing." Once outside, I ran into Council President George Edwards. Asked him why he was there, and he said: "I wanted to see that an- other Peekskill did not happen here. It didn't."
