THI lMICHIGAN IAILY - IFRIDAY, h I )F GREECE AND ROME: New Clements Display Shows Ptolemy's World I C CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING The newest material on display at the Clements Library deals with "The World of Ptolemy." Claudius Ptolemy, a second cen- tury geographer of Alexandria and librarian of the great library there, drew better maps and collected, more information of the world known to the Greeks and RomansI than any other man of his time. His geographical studies were in use for nearly 1800 years. FIRST USED by the Greeks as a text and guide, they had much under distribution after their translation into Latin by Jacobus Angelus. The first edition, printed in 1475, included the text only as the original maps were Iost. Lat- er redrawings were made from the text. America first appeared on a map in a book in 1508, on a chart drawn by Prof. Martin Waldseemuller, of St. Die college in France. * * * WALDSEEMULLER titled the land mass after Americus Vespu- cius whom he erroneously believed to be its discoverer. By the eighteenth century, the editions are reasonably accurate in their reports of the geography of the world. IT'S A HIT-Books and studies are temporarily forgotten as students jam the Union Cafeteria to watch the second game of the World Series on television. They saw "them bums" beat the Yankees 1-0, to tie up the series. Patten, professor of anatomy and chairman of the Department of Anatomy in the Medical School, has been selected by Sigma Xi, national honorary scientific research society, as one of four national lecturers for the year 1949-1950. Dr. Patten will present a series of 22 lectures to Sigma Xi chap- ters located throughout the south- western part of the country. Eight lectures will be given this fall, and the remaining lectures will be given after the first of the year. THE FIRST LECTURE will,,be presented October 10, at the Uni- versity of Illinois, followed by lec- tures at Bradley University, Uni- versity of Nebraska, University of Kansas, Kansas State College, Ok- lahoma A & M College, University of Oklahoma and a joint lecture in St. Louis for St. Louis University and Washington University. The general field covered by Dr. Patten's lectures will be "The Development of the Em- bryonic Heart and Circulation." The lectures will be illustrated by explanatory lantern slides and by micromoving pictures of living embryos. The pictures utilize the techniques developed by Dr. Pat- ten and his collaborator, Dr. The- odore C. Kramer, assistant profes- sor of anatomy at the University. A Return Hit Brought Back By Popular Request! posed penalty, the Ann Arbor Post Office warned yesterday.l The announcement was made by Mary Purtell, superintendent of the Maynard St. substation, after several violations were discovered by postal clerks this week and last. * * * AN ADDED CHARGE of three cents an ounce will be tacked on any parcel post packages contain- ing matter other than specified, such as clothes or laundry. Total cost will be paid by the receiver, Miss Purtell said. In some cases, this charge can amount to a small fortune, she added. She spoke of a violation last spring which set back an unwary male student $20.64, nearly 12 times more than ac- tual mailing costs. Approximately 100 violations were listed last year by the office. Of this number, "quite a few" were faculty members, Miss Purtell not- ed. ONLY THREE cartons opened so far this year by postal clerks have revealed the presence of written material, she said. Names fo violators are submitted to the U.S. Post Office Bureau, Wash- ington, and jail penalties may re- sult, she warned. Prof. A.
